1 1 1 Cruz Sentinel Wednesday, November 7, 1979 Persons Injured Leads Package To Three In Highway 236 Crash Dope Bust A suspicious-looking package Three persons were hurt Tuesday when their car crossed over the center line on Highway 236 and crashed head-on into an oncoming auto. CHP officers said Thomas Allen Wingo, 42, Boulder Creek, crossed over the center line on a hairpin curve and crashed into an oncoming auto driven by Christine Anne Carson, 32, 13896 Bear Creek Road, Boulder Creek. Two passengers in the Wingo car Rae Ann Wingo, 21, and Rachael Wingo, 2, both of Boulder Creek were taken to the hospital along with the driver, said reports. All were treated and released. A car skidded off Highway 17 near Laurel Road Tuesday evening, causing injury to its driver, CHP officers reported today.

Gerald Joseph Rainey, 45, 950 Whispering Pines Drive, Scotts Valley, was driving south on Highway 17 when he failed to negotiate a slight curve and his car ran off the road into a turnout, said reports. When Rainey realized his car was in the turnout, he turned the car's wheels, sending the auto into a broadside skid. The auto hit a signpost and a guardrail before coming to a stop. Rainey was taken to Dominican Hospital, where he was treated and released. A motorcyclist suffered broken facial bones when his cycle collided with a car on Soquel Drive west of Mission Drive Tuesday morning.

CHP officers said Patrick J. Grimes, 21, 1781 Felt St. Apt. 4, was riding on Soquel Drive when a car driven by Larry Everett Joslin, 67, 2923 Granite Creek Road, Scotts Valley, turned left in front of him and he collided with it. Two moped riders were hurt when they collided with a car on Soquel Drive at the 41st Avenue intersection Tuesday morning.

CHP officers said a car driven by Michael Economou, 63, 3261 Roland Drive, pulled from a private driveway into the path of two moped riders. The moped crashed into the car and sent its passenger to the ground. The driver of the moped was identified as Vera Ellen Goeglein, 22, 4430 Soquel Drive, Soquel. Her passenger, Karen Andrade, 19, also of the Soquel Drive address, was treated at Dominican Hospital for injuries and released. A motorcyclist was hurt when he collided with a car on Cedar Street south of Lincoln Street Tuesday afternoon.

Police said James Lynn VonWal, 17, 214 Jeter was driving on Cedar Street when a car driven by Sharon Ann Kelly, 22, 110 Ocean pulled from a private driveway and the two collided. VonWal was hurt in the crash and treated at a local hospital, said Santa Cruz Police. Crime Report Thief Takes Truck, Household Goods A thief made off with a Granite Rock truck and household goods totalling $5,200 from the Arden Way, Aptos, home of James Holmquist. Sheriff's deputies said the burglar broke into the home and took two television sets, a casette player and a camera. Three guns were stolen from a gun collection at the Hidden Valley Road, Soquel, home of James Ritchey, sheriff's deputies said today.

Loss was set at less than $3,000. Former SC Librarian Geraldine Work Dies Geraldine Work, retired Santa Cruz county and city librarian, was found deceased in her Green Street home this morning. She was 80 years old. Mrs. Work served as county and city librarian from 1941 until her retirement in 1970.

During that time she helped plan and carry out library expansion, including the opening of the Branciforte Library in 1967 and the new main library in 1969. A native of Colusa, she served as assistant librarian there after being graduated from a library school in Los Angeles. She later served as librarian of Tehema County and was librarian at the Pacific House Library on Treasure Island during the 1939 world's Aptos School Fund-Raising Dinner Event A fried chicken dinner will be Thursday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to raise money for the Aptos Junior High School Project Fund. It will be at the Aptos Junior High multi-purpose room.

The event will feature the awarding of $300 worth of door prizes and a cake decorating contest. Tickets are $2.50 for adults, $2 for students in sixth grade or under and free for children under 4. Aptos Junior High Home and School Club is asking people donate cakes for the event. Cakes should be brought to the school by 6 p.m. Thursday.

Park Addition Dedication Set Five additional acres of redwood trees will be dedicated to the 10-acre California Garden Club's conservation education grove in Big Basin Redwoods State Park Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the park's amphitheater. Funds to set aside the grove were raised by members of the California Garden Clubs Inc. to honor the 50th anniversary of the National Council of State Garden Clubs.

The grove dedication program is sponsored by the Sempervirens Fund. Funds contributed by members for the grove are matched by state funds. Those interested in attending the ceremony should call Sempervirens Fund at (415) 968-4509. 22 at 1:30 4 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson Taylor Teen-Agers Slash Man With Knife A 29-year-old man was slashed with a knife Tuesdy by two teen-agers whom he spotted removing the gas cap from his car, sheriff's deputies reported today. Richard Ramirez told deputies he was slashed on the stomach and chest in the assault, which occurred near the Soquel High School parking lot.

The two suspects escaped. According to reports, Ramirez spotted the teen-agers near his car and saw them remove a gas cap from his auto. He chased the pair into the nearby brush where one pulled a knife and the other grabbed him. Ramirez said one of the boys slashed him repeatedly until he managed to wrestle the knife from his grasp. The trio struggled on the ground for a few minutes, before the two boys grabbed the knife and fled.

The suspects were described as 17-year-old males. One was approximately 5 feet 9, 170 pounds with -blond hair. The second was 6 feet, 190 pounds with straight brown collar-length hair. Youth Writing Competition Open To Dec. 7 High school students are eligible to enter the 1979-1980 National Youth Writing Competition.

Those who wish to enter should submit poems and short stories before Dec. 7. Winning entries in fiction and poetry categories will receive a first prize of $25. Prize poems will be published in the Interlochen Review, a journal of fine high school writing. Santa Cruz Police arrested two men identified as year -old Mark Joseph Langlais, 622-A Oaks Drive, Capitola and 29-year-old Herbert Dean Brown, 4650 Soquel Wharf Road, Soquel after United Parcel Service employees opened the suspicious package discovered it contained small quantity of marijuana. Police investigators said note in the package and markings led them to arrest Langlais and Brown. According to reports, a UPS clerk became suspicious when a man asked to insure a small, poorly-wrapped package for $150.

The man told the clerk the package contained a photograph, but the employee noticed that the package was not properly wrapped to prevent the photo from bending. The clerk obtained the customer's license plate and when employees opened the package they found it contained marijuana. Mailing information led SanPolice to arrest Langlais at his Capitola home. Three pounds of marijuana wasto discovered at the residence, said police. Brown was arrested at his home where officers discovered 24 large sinsemilla marijuana plants valued at $30,000.

Brown was booked on suspicion of cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale. Langlais was arrested on suspicion of possession of marijuana for sale and possession of a controlled substance. Deputies Arrest Man For Selling Pot In Store A 26-year-old man suspected of selling marijuana from a convenience food store was arrested by sheriff's deputies early today. Gary Peffley, 1021 38th was booked in County Jail on suspicion of possession of less than a pound of marijuana and sales of marijuana following his arrest at the Jiffy Food store in Soquel. According to reports, Peffley offered to sell an ounce of marijuana to a store customer, who in turn notified sheriff's deputies.

Deputies set up an arranged buy and reportedly purchased the ounce of marijuana from Peffley. According to reports, Peffley had additional marijuana at the store. Stolen Guns Prompt Arrests Two men were arrested Tuesday night when sheriff's deputies found two stolen guns in their pickup trucks, according to reports today. Dave Paul Fail, 18, and James Bruce Cooper, 21, both transients, were booked in County Jail on suspicion of grand theft, possession of stolen property and conspiracy. Deputies said the two had a rifle and an M-1 carbine believed to have been stolen from a janitor at the Quail Hollow School.

According to reports, deputies stopped the men's pickup after noticing it was piled high with junk and covered with a tarp. Deputies said a tire held the tarp in place, and since there had been a recent tire theft in the area they stopped, the truck. Officers found the guns about the same time County Communications put out a bulletin for two men driving a pickup who had reportedly stolen a pair of guns in the Quail Hollow School burglary. March Is Planned Nov. 13 marks the fifth anniversary of the death of Karen Silkwood, a union activist and worker who tried to expose alleged unsafe working conditions at the Kerr McGee nuclear facility in Oklahoma.

Ludie Pohlman Rites Friday Memorial services will be Friday for Ludie Pohlman, who died Monday in a local convalescent hospital at age 82. She was a native of Czechoslovakia and she came to California in 1908 settling in San Jose, where she lived for 66 years. She moved to Aptos in 1974 to live with I her daughter and she had been employed as a bookkeeper for several new and used car dealerships. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, Rebeccas and Almaden Grange. Survivors include her daughter, Gladys Schoennauer of Aptos; two brothers, Joe Von Grey of San Martin and Ed Von Grey of San Jose and four grandchildren.

Memorial services will held at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 2601 Park Soquel, Friday at 2 p.m. Private interment will be at Oakhill Memorial Park. He was 104. A native of Buffalo, N.Y., he came to Santa Cruz from Riverside in 1966. He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and Mid-County Senior Citizens. For many years, he was active in applying scientific procedures to poultry husbandry. There are no known survivors.
