spends $250000 a year to maintain a force of electricians and carpenters to make needed repairs in homes at no cost to residents The Jamaicans who are brought in to pick the cane from early November to mid-March are housed in military-style barracks 20 men to a building A mess hall serves them native food courtesy of a Jamaican who once worked in the fields but became the Runyon cook 26 years ago MOST OF THE same men return each year from Jamaica as well as other West Indian countries and few' say they miss their countries while they stay When they return home they bring gifts from Belle Glade for their families Many come with strings the size of their feet to be able to buy them shoes Many return home wealthy by their standards and few would to cut cane when in their native land And many gain permanent residence in the United States and at Runyon and advance to year-round domestic jobs such as tractor driving by marrying American women At least half of the full-time domestic workers at Runyon are foreign-born Evelyn Greaves from Barbados is one such immigrant Greaves is the assistant foreman in charge of all foreign labor in the village Me is 58 has been in Runyon Village since 1 948 and has been assistant foreman since 1962 lie is not interested in talking about himself only about how wonderful a place Runyon is a beautiful place to work EXPECT I work here since 1918 if not beautiful he asks "1 think it is one of the most beautiful companies you could ever work he says looking at foreman Jerry Phillips for approval Phillips 10 one of only a handful of whites at the plantation runs the show there the sheriff mayor and lawyer" he says only half-jokinglv And there is one suspects more truth than whimsy in his light-hearted statement that someone ever killed me in Belle Glade and they found out here these folks would march on the towm far as I know 1 have ah enemy in the village" he says A sampling of the residents reveal they either dearly love the man or are scared to death of him He is the provider who keeps the plantation and the village running smoothly and he is the policeman who maintains order in the fields and the homes "I want them to rely on me I hear all their complaints They know I look out for them better than any other One thing 1 try my best to do is keep crime out I patrol (the village) every other night But the prjmary reason he admits is to inspire company loyalty "Obviously we do it because we think it gives us a better he said "It gives us their loyalty You've got to remember doing the harvest is a seven-day-a-week job Normally (the cane workers) work six-day 60-hour weeks But sometimes we have to ask them to work that day off With company loyalty we know if we ask them to do something do it "Several years he continued "the UFW (United Farm Workers) came in and tried to organize our employes They were not successful because our people felt that we had their best interests at heart and we MRS BERNICE MOCK 47 has been living in Runyon for 22 years She and her husband a tractor driver are native Americans She is perhaps the archetypal Runyon-ite Ask her if ever leave and her eyes open in disbelief "Sure she says "I can tell you that with speed I been here so iong I think home We got a good bossman and his wife I tell his wife often that about the best bossman we've ever had out here out of all the bossmen who've been here "I tell him all our father lie says know it I know You know if you serve the company till your retirement you can stay here till dead I already done spent all my best days down here and gonna spend the that prevents them from being rude So though it makes them uncomfortable if asked they will talk about their feelings Edward Harris 46 is less reluctant than most for he has been coming to the United States for 10 years and says he has been happily He has lived in Runyon fulltime the last three years as a man" or coordinator of foreigners in the field He has brought his wife and seven children with him from Jamaica Three of the children work on the farm Four go to school in Belle Glade He has chosen to make Runyon his home PREFER to live in the village (rather) than the he says "Every now and then you hear about someone breaking into a house and hurting someone Here there is nothing like that The foreman makes us very happy There are gardens for us where everyone can plant their peas and okra and tomatoes and pumpkins and yams and cocoa They do everything they can here to make us happy and we really appreciate US commitment to making its employes has cost the company over $1 million in capital improvements for Runyon Village alone since 1964- according to Executive Vice President Harry Vaughn The rationale behind it he said is partly one of tradition The company has housed its plantation employes since the early 19'iOs Vaughn estimated when wooden frame houses dotted the village I also have what I call my lookouts in the camp those I trust more than others I look out for cars that belong I guard against gambling and As a result he says Runyon has seldom been plagued by the vandalism and other problems that charactcrically plague migrant camps "ALL MY COLOREDS are he says "If not I ask them why and make them The housing arrangements at Runyon reflect the hierarchy there Phillips his wife and three daughters live in a nicely landscaped ranch-style home with a roomier interior than the duplexes which house the domestic machine operators and families on the north side of the village The cinder-block duplexes are just a bit more cramped and their white exterior it seems everything in the village is painted while are a bit duller a bit worse for wear than the foremen's homes But they are far from run-down Duplexes on the south end of the village serve as the barracks for the foreigners Two-tier metal bunk beds with thin mattresses line the walls Clothes hang from overhead pipes and are stored in lockers Beds are made shoes and slippers tucked under the bunks The house rules posted on the walls require neatness Empty Busch beer cans with the tops removed so they can be used as ashtrays are tucked in corners and put under beds 'I HE JAMAICANS to a man lithe sinewy muscular are painfully shv They keep to themselves spend most of their spare time playing dominoes and cricket on a field set up for that purpose and generally have little to do with the American blacks in the village They have an inborn politeness pjioteel YOUR HOME aged ha HURRICANE BURGLARY SUN JESSS WIIH I Hit COUPON ONLY Now advanced
