Easter pets have very special needs SANTA CRUZ The city of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department reminds those who are contemplating the purchase of Easter ducklings or bunnies that these animals have very special needs as they mature.

Some might assume that releasing these animals at a nearby park or golf course assures their survival. This is not the case, says a department spokesman, since the adaptive instincts needed to find food, shelter, and escape the curious canine are diminished due to their prior captivity. The department recommends that this Easter people celebrate the arrival of spring at one of the many city parks. Hundreds of flowers and trees are in full bloom and provide a colorful and fragrant setting for a family outing. Ducks, geese, swans and other waterfowl can be enjoyed in their natural habitats at Neary's Lagoon, San Lorenzo and West Lake parks, to name a few.

In his second major speech on the subject in two days, Reagan told the Los Angeles World Affairs Council on Thursday he is "determined to achieve real arms control" despite Soviet charges that he only wants a new arms race. Asked afterward if the United States should try harder to convince skeptics.

particularly in those NATO countries where there is mounting pressure for a nuclear freeze. Reagan said the United States must do a better job of arguing its own case. The freeze movement, he said. threatens to "destroy all hope for an agreement" and can only do more harm than good. In Washington, Sen.

Edward M. Kennedy, a proponent of the freeze. for adoption Saturday at 11 a.m. at the shelter, 2200-7th Ave. The shelter has many young and mature dogs and cats and sometimes rabbits, chickens and ducks.

The shelter opens at 9 a.m. said Reagan's speech showed he is "obviously feeling the heat from the freeze. Instead of another unfounded attack on it. he should welcome the freeze for providing the necessary public and congressonal support for a sincere effort to achieve a true halt to the nuclear arms race." Reagan said that in Western Europe. "it is true that there is a great counterpropaganda effort there trying to divide us from our allies, divide them from us and at the same time to prevent the scheduled deployment of the Pershings and cruise missiles" designed to counter the Soviets' positioning of medium-range SS20 missiles aimed at Europe.

"I don't know whether we can actually turn around some of the people that have organized, as they have here, regard to the nuclear freeze." Reagan said. "But we have not been the best in years past at matching our adversaries in propaganda. and we better realize we've got something to sell, and we better start selling it. Christians celebrate death of Jesus Christ with prayers JERUSALEM (AP) In the walled Old City where Jesus died 1,950 years ago, Franciscan monks led a solemn procession along the Via Dolorosa on Good Friday, following the path that Jesus is believed to have walked to his Crucifixion. Protestants held a service at the Garden Tomb, a tranquil park a few hundred yards north of the city walls.

Only a handful of police could be seen guarding the pilgrims along the yard-long Via Dolorosa, the Street of Sorrows. There was no sign of the fully armed border police who used to escort the pilgrims and watch from rooftops to guard against violence. The streets of the Old City were crowded with pilgrims and tourists. Outside the walls the roads were congested with visitors spending Easter and the coinciding Jewish Passover holiday in Jerusalem. Nevertheless, there was a noticeable drop in the number of pilgrims.

The Tourism Ministry expected 70,000 visitors for Easter and Passover, a drop of at least 10 percent from last year. The Middle East's tensions and the West's recession were believed to be keeping pilgrims away. The procession set out from the first Station of the Cross, where Jesus was tried, and wound along the narrow street to the Church A bicyclist went to the hospital with mouth injuries after running a stop sign and wrecking her bike, Santa Cruz Police report. Dianna Littleton, 19, 125-A Canfield was traveling south on Bay St. at a high rate of speed, a witness told police.

She passed a car which was stopped at West Cliff Drive and Bay St. After passing on the right she went through the stop sign, according to the report. Inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, followers of various Christian denominations chanted prayers around the grotto of Jesus' tomb in the wide diversity of languages and Christian rites. Within a radius of 200 yards, Moslems, who worship every Friday, piped prayers over loudspeakers, while hundreds of Jews clustered at the Wailing Wall to celebrate the fourth day of the Passover week commemorating the Israelite exodus from the pharaoh's Egypt. In Rome, Pope John Paul II walks the Stations of the Cross symbolically, carrying a wooden cross along a route to the ancient ruins near the Colosseum.
