Kathea Charley a he was familiarly known to us, or, as his name seemed to be, Frederick Gustave Eather. an old citizen of Napa, aud a genial, kind hearted man, died at his residence in that city Friday morning last. Mr. Eather, so we learn from the Register, was a native of Saxony, and was born Sept. 14, 1834.

He came to Napa in 1856, and has ever since been engaged there in butchering. He was a prominent Odd Fellow, also a member of the Pioneer Engine Company and the Napa Turn Verem. HELENA Lumber Gore to Lakeport. The big stock of dry goods at Haas A Co's store has been closed out here and the proprietors will open out at Lakeport, where we can assure the people of that town they will treat them honorably and give them big bargains. We are glad to say they did well here, disposing of an immense amount of goods. We wish them success and a speedy return to St. Helena.

We are surprised at the extent of business done by our popular dentist. Dr. CL E. Davis. He is always busy, and hsdf the time we find him operating on people from a distance; from Calistoga, from the Tallies, and not infrequently from Napa itself, where they have an abundance of excellent dentists.

The fact seems to be that onr dentist is a very superior workman, and they all like to get him, if possible. He has a good office, too, well furnished with modern appliances, and has so deep a knowledge of and love for his profession that he has himself invented many of the most useful articles employed in it. A. Rain Prophecy. A gentleman a farmer who lives near town, makes a prophecy as to the rainfall of the coming Winter.

He writes it as follows: There will fall not one inch of rain to the first day of December; 10 inches in December, 12 inches in February, 5 inches in March and April aud the balance intervening whatever that may mean Ed. to 33 inches for Winter and Spring, 1877-8. If the prophecy dont come true, he wont care to have his name printed; if it does we shall give it after awhile. Biao the torpidity of ths livsr tk chief can of iU disorder, it is evident that whet th hOioas require is alters tire stimulant which will arouse it to activity, an eCect that is followed by th disappearance of th Tenons symptom indicative of its derangement. Is Ymr I4fe Wsrtk Tea Ceata Hickness prevails everywhere, and everybody complains of some disease during their life. When sick, the object is to get well; now to say plainly that no person in this world, that is snfferlDg Dyspepsia, Liver Complaint and its effects, such as Indigestion, Cosriveness, Sick Headache, Sour Stomach, Heart Burn, palpitation of the Heart, Depress ed spirits, Biliousnes, can take Greens August Flower, without getting relief and cure. This is a progressive age. New features are constantly being introduced, old theories are revolutionized. Music, which but a feW. vewra since was un-thought of in that connection, has 'been introduced iu our public schools in many sections of our country and it has become almost a necessity fur every family to possess either a Piano or Organ, or both, and it is important that all should know here the best intruments can be bought for the least money. and ill endeavor to me it the patronage of its old friend Call and SmUiI SAND A. terribl railroad strike has broken oat in Western Pennsylvania. At Pittsburg, Sunday, a great mob destroyed vast quantities of railroad property and successfully resisted the troops sent against them, several pefsons being killed on both Sides. They were armed with small arms and one or more cannon. They burned the Union Depot and all the immense railroad building of the city, and also 70 engine and 250 cars, the whole being slued at over $3,000,000.

Besides this destruction, robbery was also perpetrated upon the freight and baggage in the trains and railroad buildings. The trouble commenced on the Baltimore Ohio road, and ssems to have met with encouragement from inefficient resistance. The people of Pittsburg are said to have ympathized with the strikers on account of an alleged discrimination in freight charges against their city. The strike had broken out elsewhere, and there was great danger-unless prompt and rigorous measures were taken of a general insurrection on all the railroad lines from the Atlantic to the Mississippi; an insurrection that would cost thousands of lives and billions of property and interrupt the transportation business of the country for an indefinite tipie. State and national troops ive been called out and it is to le hoped will make no half-way measures in meeting the emergency.

Let cannon, if necessary, plow the ranks of any mob that would lay violent hands on the property of others, that would apply the torch, that would interfere with the movement of a train or in any way take violent measures to force terms upon another. Every non lias a right to say what he will work for, but he has no right to compel aunthei man to give it, and the instant he attempts to do so he becomes a public enemy mid should be treated as such. And it is moreover not only the duty but the interest of every citizen to assist in suppressing any movement of this kind. Let him remember that the government is responsible for the protection of private property, and that any destruction of such property will I ave to be paid for afterwards dollar for dollar and will swell hia own taxes to help make it up. Rev. LOWELL L. ROGERS, A. Wages Restored. At the first of the month an order was sent out from the General Office of the Central Pacific Railroad Company, that a reduction would immediately be made in the salaries of all employes receiving over $2 per day.

Though the order was very unwelcome, and in some cases, perhaps, caused temporary discomfort, yet it was acquiesced in at once. On Saturday alternoon, the Board of Directors of the several compair.es held a meeting and rescinded their action and passed an order instead that the men should be paid silver instead of gold. Val. F. BEATTY, Washington, New 1 1' you want a WX3STX -TVTTT Prof. Rogers. This gentleman's LECTURE ON EDUCATION Saturday evening we were unfortunately deprived of hearing; but hear it highly spoken of those who were present. One good effect we know it has had to decide many of our young people to go and avail themselves of the Professors educations powers, they being so favorably impressed wiili his style and ability as to want to imbibe some of it in a regular course of training.

-We are glad of this: He is a fine teacher and it will do our young people good to sit at his feet. His SERMON SUNDAY MORNING was a materpiece of pulpit eloquence and fine thought, and made regret frequently that it was not considered proper to applaud in the House of God. We should have liked to have cheered to the echo many of the noble thoughts and beautiful passages with which it was filled. The text was from the 19th Psalm, 7-11: The law of the 1 ord is perfect, converting the the soul the testimony of the Lord is auie, making wise the simple The statutes of the ord are riht, ejoioin? the heart, the ooinnmn Imeut of the Lord is puie, enlightening the eyes. he fear of the o-d is clean, endurin? for ever the judgments of the Lord are true and riKbteoua altogether More to desired are they than pold yea, than much fine gold, sweeter also than honey anti the honeycomb More ver by them is thy servant warned: anl in keeping of them there is gteat reward.

The house was well filled in the morning. In the evening it was more so, to hear his TEMrERANCK LECTURE Which, by request, was made the subject of the discourse. He chose for his text, 1 Thcs. 5 :22. Abstain from all appearance of evil." The lecture was a good one, though we thought uot up to the morning's KF'Cash raid 1 ouniry I roduce.

As to the relative sizes of Lakeport and St. Helena, wlncii the item compares as four to one in favor of the former, we cannot say, having never seen Lakeport, but those who have -een both tell us that the two towns are about the same size. The whole thing pu.zlos us to understand why so aimless a piece of falsehood and silliness should have been written; and as we dont think that Mr. Vtting himself has any ular quarrel ith St. IleleDa, we are forced to the conclusion that the item has been penned by some tramp who has been kicked out of this place, and avails himself of a temporary charge of the Lakeport office to veut his spleen against it.

His dumb lips shall never more breathe in fervent praise of the land he loved.
