Just kind of limped into town it seems with little fanfare and less word-of-mouth Hard to understand for the film is an absolute charm a low-key parody of private-eye movies and MOs nostalgia revivals that hits the right notes -over and over again Michael Caine is the Peeper the transplanted Britisher who came to 1947 Southern California and set up his office as close to the stars as possible in hopes Betty Grable or Michael Caine uliglitly declasse Birds-Bees a Fascinating Be Thrifty See Today's Ads Study of Animal-Mating Nothing is as it seems throughout the investigation which takes Caine muttering private eyeisms all the way through scrapes from a Bel Aire mansion guarded by a Japanese houseboy who boasts he spent the war in Beverly Hills to a bumper-to-bumper freeway traffic jam site of the definitive car chase in whirh protagonists who get out and walk quickly surge ahead of motorized chasers MOST devious of the characters in the true Bogart tradition is Ellen (Natalie Wood) sister to the missing woman and a triple-twist schemer Wood just barely manages in this kind of thing but Came and the others are so good as is the script that her stiffness can be overlooked filmed partly on a Miami-based cruise ship is shot in what w'e by now accept as standard the tinted film used in and to locate us firmly in the MOs about the only standard that holds up however At one point when the Peeper grapples with one of two torpedoes from Tampa who are constantly popping up to try to do him in someone draws a gun and there is the inevitable shot Both men stiffen and we wait with the customary agony to see which has taken hot lead As it turns out of course no one has and the fight goes on That HAS to be the first time happened Nothing in goes according to plan but there is no slapstick and some of the barbs are soft enough that the laughs come for long seconds But they do come for is one of the funniest of the jear If Mel Brooks were subtle this might have been the sequel to "Young As it Is it takes Michael Caine to get away with this kind of line as he answers his office phone "Leslie Tucker investigations Select your private detective as you would your attorney or Suggestive of a sugary sex comedy from the 1950s that title may scare off just the kind of audience who 1 might want to see it liniflC the most For IVlUVlC is a polished high- nrir quality documentary HtllhW on the mating habits of animals that is breaking ground and doing it well The question of propriety involved in scenes of non-human procreation which prompted Wo-metco to tack on an extra warning to parents beyond the PG rating is a tangled one Suffice it to say that "Birds Do It Bpcs Do has been made tastefully if explicitly and never simpers or giggles And for those of us who always wondered what was left out of those Disney documentaries the answer is finally here In particular I remember the film sequences of Great Western grebes in their protracted and amazingly comical premating aquatic dances first documented in colorful detail by a Disney team You never saw what happened after the two grebes had finished dancing and begun to make baby grebes Presumably according to always-proper Disney the birds juut slunk away and consummated everything by mail In you find out The film documents actual mating episodes ranging from the division of unicellular organisms to the coupling of elephants in color photography that is uniformly excellent and often dizzying It turns out that much of this previously offscreen material is truly fascinating in the case of some species the most interesting thing they do is mate sidetracks to record whole life cycles of several species particulary the fly (in a series of mind-boggling time-lapse photographs that document the hatching of maggots on the body of a mouse and their subsequent consumption of the entire corpse) BUT MOSTLY mating From the deadly lovemaking of preying mantises in which the male is so dedicated that his mating is undisturbed even as the receptive female turns on him and eats him picking his shell clean like a human scooping out a crab claw to the parody of among frogs From the eerie exchange of hermaphroditic snails (in stunning close-up) to Lincoln Center Croup lo Tour NEW YORK (UPI) The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center resident chamber group at Alice Tully Hall for the past six years will make its first national tour next February The two-week tour opens Feb 3 at Sewanee Tenn and includes 12 concerts in Tennessee Missouri Illinois Minnesota Michigan Ohio New York New Jersey (an incredible process also documented here) but never see a cow The threat the film makes plain has extended to man as well The downbeat finale is an unneeded deflation of the balance of which is largely a celebration of life of a high order Nonetheless "Birds Do It Bees Do is a great piece of nature film and the brief bit of moralizing cannot dull the lustrous photography Just the thing for lovers of documentaries nature buffs or anyone ever wondered what rhinos REALLY did behind closed doors BIRDS DO IT BEES DO IT Is ruled PG end Wometco ha added a warning advising "careful parental
