C-14 Santa Cruz Sentinel Thursday, Nov. 21, 1985 Crenna does xDoubletake' kw pi 1 Ip" It the performances. We had a great cast." The movie also stars Vincent Bag-getta, Paul Gleason, Cliff Gorman, Drew Snyder and Lee Richardson. Crenna talked about the show as he prepared to leave for Mexico to begin his role as Texas entrepreneur H. Ross Perot in the NBC miniseries "On Wings of Eagles." The five-hour docudrama will be filmed in Mexico.

The miniseries tells of the rescue of two American businessmen taken hostage after the Shah of Iran was toppled from power in 1979. Perot hired Arthur "Bull" Simons, a retired Green Beret colonel to lead a commando raid into Iran. Burt Lancaster stars as Simons and Paul LeMat as his assistant. The series is adapted from the book by Ken Follett. "I haven't met Perot yet, but I have a feeling I'm going to," he said.

"The comments he made about the script were that he wanted to be certain that his men were treated with respect and regarded as heroes. He didn't want their families to be embarrassed. He said he didn't care who played him, but he was concerned about who would play Bull Simons." Crenna is one of the busiest actors in town and switches regularly between movies and television. He's starred in five series, "Our Miss Brooks," "The Real McCoys," "Slattery's People," "All's Fair" and "It Takes Two." His feature films include "Wait Until Dark," "The Sand Pebbles," "Body Heat," "The Flamingo Kid," "Summer Rental" and both "Rambo" movies. About the "Rambo" films, Crenna said, they've "gotten so much criticism and for such strange Someone asked my daughter, 'How does your father feel about being in a jingoistic It's not a political film, anymore than 'Robin Hood' was a treatise against monarchism.

It's entertainment, but people have to shoot the political part full of holes." Crenna also makes the transition between comedy and drama regularly enough that he hasn't been pigeonholed. "I feel variety is important to me as an actor," he said. "As an actor I've always wanted to go back and forth between comedy and drama and between television and feature pictures. I want to experiment and learn." AP Laserphoto Richard Crenna portrays a rumpled detective. switched the heads.

In the second story, Crenna tries to find out why his former police partner committed suicide and eventually stumbles upon a trail of corruption in the police department. The third story tells how Crenna, the battle-scarred veteran of a bitter divorce, reluctantly falls in love with a younger woman (Beverly D'Angelo) who becomes a target for the killer and who, it turns out, has connections to the police scandal. Crenna said he sees this as the flip side of "The Rape of Richard Beck," the role that brought him an Emmy in September. In that he played a tough police sergeant who is gang-raped. "This is more of a procedural kind of story," he said.

"No chases or gunplay. It's really a psychological kind of thriller. It's challenging in that respect, to keep interest over four hours. If the picture scores on any level it will be for the quality of By JERRY BUCK The Associated Press LOS ANGELES Richard Crenna is the rumpled detective, selfconsciously passing through middle age, a candidate for burnout and faced with the most bizarre crime in his career. The movie is "Doubletake," a four-hour mystery that CBS will broadcast in two parts, Sunday and Tuesday.

Mark it on your calendar. This is the best detective show of this or any recent year. It's literate and well-written, adapted by John Gay from the novel "Switch" by William Bayer, and directed by Jud Taylor. It offers three stories unfolding at once and in four hours there isn't one car chase or shootout. The first story follows Crenna's investigation of the murders of a schoolteacher and a prostitute by someone who decapitated them and The Wiz' kids over 100 cast members, a full orchestra, elaborate sets and unique costuming.

"Annual" is a term used loosely for the awards hosted by the National Academy of Video Arts. In fact, the third awards ceremony was held only last April, meaning only seven months will have passed between shows.

But meantime, NAVAS won a contract with ABC, which recorded the hourlong ceremony Wednesday night at the Wiltern Theater and will broadcast it Friday at 9 p.m. The show, hosted by Tony Danza, star of ABC's "Who's The Boss," featured Sheila E. and Martin Mull. Presenters included Kenny Rogers, Clarence Clemons, Apollonia Kotero, Lorenzo Lamas, Grace Jones, Lisa Hartman and Aimee Mann. The NAVAS awards compete with the MTV video awards, which conducted this year's ceremonies in a lavish and well-tended affair at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, hosted by Eddie Murphy.
