It started in a shed in the rear of the main bnilding and the flames were confined to the shed by quick arrival of the fire eugiues. Ex-Congressman Charles Lois Beale died at Hudson N. aged 75. Mrs. McEnith Yauther, aged 105 years and 8 months, died at Walton, of grip. Fourteen iamilies have been rendered homeless at Chicago by the burning of a tenement-house.

The inahogauy lumber yards of J. O. Raynor, aud the Austin box factory burned at Chicago. Loss (826,000. Every steam laundry of any importance in Chicago will be operated by one stock company if the present plans do not miscarry.

A transport bearing Spanish soldiers from Cuba arrived at Barcelona, Spain, a few days ago. Of the 1250 soldiers 850 were seriously ill and 56 died during the voyago. Tho 80-horse-power boilers of the Shoreveport (La.) Oil mill exploded one morning recently. A brick bnilding 100 feet square, was tom to pieces and five men killed. Conferences are being held in New York looking to the formation of a combination of wholesale grocers in the western states who do an annual business of (500,000 or more.

Smallpox is on the increase at Ponce, Porto Rico, where 150 cases are being treated. The military governor has ordered compulsory vacillation. Reports from other parts of the island tell of only scattered cases. Expert stenographers all over the country have formed an organization known as the the National Stenographers association. Great stockades and stables will be built, workshops erected and arrangements made for putting the army equipment sent there in first carder before it is formally distributed to Cuba and Porto Rioo.

Tho case against the others named by Lopez us accomplices fell flat. Tho residence of Mayor Bergnmn of Astoria was robbed recently, and his wife lost a thousand dollars worth of diamonds. A marvelous strike is reported from the Isabella mine at Cripple Creek, Col. The strike is said to be 20 feet long and six feet thick and will need no treatment before going to the mint.1' At one point the seam is pare gold and three inches thick. General Menocal of Havana has been advised that General Rabi is on the warpath with 1500 troops. The government officials refuse to give particulars of the confession. The Znni tribe of Indians, living on a reservation in the western part of Now Mexico, is suffering from a plague of smallpox.
