Kansas State shut down Iowa State's running game and its bruising tailback. Dwayne Crutchfield. and edged the llth-ranked Cyclones io-7 behind the running of sophomore Mark Hundley Saturday.

Hundley crashed over from the 2-yard line early in the third quarter, capping an 80-yard Wildcat drive after the second-half kickoff to put K-State in front. A harassing defense kept Iowa State at bay the rest of the way. Crutchfield, the Big Eight's leading rusher and No. 8 ground gainer in the nation going into the game with a 139.9-yard average, managed just 46 yards on 11 carries. He sat out part of the fourth quarter with a jammed neck.

A 73-yard quick kick by SMU's Craig James pushed back to its 10 early in the fourth quarter, and the Aggies could not rally. Garcia's field goals carried 19 and 38 yards on his only two attempts. Oklahoma 49, Colorado 0 NORMAN, Okla. Senior quarterback Dar-rell Shepard kept the football for the lion's share of Oklahoma's rushing and three touchdowns as the 19th-ranked Sooners mauled Colorado 49-0 in a Big Eight Conference football game Saturday. Shepard ran five of the 10 first-quarter plays that led to his first touchdown, a 5-yard romp.

But he was indebted to junior defensive back Gary Lowell for a 32-yard ineterception return that set up his 1-yard leap into the end zone for his second score. Meanwhile, sophomore running back George "Buster" Rhymes dived a yard to score and the 1 Sooners went to the locker room with a 21-point shutout. After his third touchdown, Shepard was replaced in the second half by junior Rod Pegues, but the touchdowns continued. Freshmen Elbert Watts and Alvin Ross each got six points on runs of more than 50 yards and freshman Fred Sims ran seven yards in the closing minutes. Arkansas 41, Rice 7 HOUSTON Arkansas freshman quarterback Brad Taylor, ignoring a steady downpour in his first college start, threw for one touchdown and ran for another Saturday to lead the 20th-ranked Razorbacks to a 41-7 Southwest Conference victory over the Rice Owls.

Taylor, starting for injured quarterback Tom Jones, passed eight yards for a touchdown to Darryl Mason and used key second quarter passing to set up James Tolbert's 7-yard touchdown run and a 22-yard field goal by Bruce Lahay. Taylor hit 12 of his 19 first half passes as the Hogs took a 17-0 halftime lead against the inept Owls, who did not make a first down until 2:35 remained in the third quarter. Hundley gained 109 yards on 28 carries to help Kansas State to its first conference victory of the season and its second triumph of the year. The 'Cats, who had lost six straight since beating South Dakota in the season opener, are playing without eight starting seniors who were redshirted to save them for 1982. Iowa State now is 2-1-1 in the Big Eight record and 5-2-1 overall.

Texas added two more sacks for 13 yards in loses late in the game against backup quarterback Richy Ethridge. Weber had three sacks and Sims and Leiding two each. It was a Tech school record for being sacked trying to pass. Tailback Rodney Tate bolted 52 yards for a touchdown on Texas' first possession to immediately dim upset hopes of the 20-point underdog Red Raiders. Texas built a 17-3 halftime lead on a 39-yard field goal by Allegre and Herkie Walls' 20-yard romp for a touchdown on an end around.

Tech's only first half points came on Jesse Garcia's career record 49-yard field goal, and the Raiders only touchdown was produced with 38 seconds to play on a 35-yard Ethridge to Bryan Williamson scoring pass. Allegre, who tied a school record held by Russell Erxleben and John Goodson, kicked field goals of 35, 43 and 34 yards in the second half. conference record, overshadowed a brilliant passing performance by Purdue's Scott Campbell. The sophomore passed for three touchdowns and a school record 516 yards. The former Purdue record was 439 yards by former Boilermaker quarterback Mark Herrmann at Iowa last year.

Schlichter also scored one touchdown and passed 29 yards to John Frank for the Buckeyes' final touchdown. For the game, the Buckeye senior passed for 336 yards, giving the two quarterbacks a total of 852 yards. Schlichter scored the Buckeyes' first touchdown on a 14-yard run two plays after Anderson's blocked punt gave Ohio State the ball at the Purdue 16-yard line in the second quarter. Purdue tied the game 17-17 early in the third quarter on a 26-yard field goal by Tim Clark. The Buckeyes went ahead to stay, however, cn their next possession as Jimmy Gayle scored on a two-yard plunge.

Another field goal by Clark, a 38-yarder, brought the Boilermakers to within four points, 24-20, going into the final period. Ohio State threatened to break open the game with two touchdowns in the first minute of the fourth quarter. A 20-yard pass to Thad Jemison set up a two-yard touchdown by Tim Spencer, then the Buckeyes recovered a Purdue fumble on the 23-yard line to set up Anderson's second touchdown catch on the first play from scrimmage. Campbell's eight-yard touchdown pass to Steve Bryant closed the gap to five points, 38-33, with seven minutes remaining. Notre Dame 38, Navy 0 SOUTH BEND, Ind.

Freshman split end Joe Howard scored two touchdowns and Blair Kiel hurled a pair of TD passes, including one of 52 yards to Howard, to lead Notre Dame to a crushing 38-0 victory over Navy Saturday. Howard, making his first start at Notre Dame, caught a 34-yard pass from Kiel to set up the game's first touchdown, took an end-around reverse 13 yards for a touchdown and then snared a 52-yard Kiel pass for another score. The victory broke a two-game Notre Dame losing streak and lifted the Irish record to 3-4 while Navy's three-game winning streak ended, leaving the Middies with a 5-3 record. Navy was bottled up completely in the first half and limited to one first down. The Middies did not cross into Notre Dame territory until the third quarter.

Gopher quarterback Mike Hohensee scored Minnesota's first TD on a short run and connected on a 39-yard scoring play to Nick Davidson for the other Minnesota score. The Wolverines moved into second place in the Big Ten with a 4-2 record while Minnesota slipped to 3-3. Illinois 24, Iowa 7 CHAMPAIGN, III. The Illinois defense forced three key turnovers Saturday, and quarterback Tony Eason turned two of them into touchdown passes to lead the lllini to a 24-7 victory over 16th-ranked Iowa. A pair of intercepted Iowa passes set up Eason's touchdown strikes of 56 yards and four yards to Oliver Williams, and Illinois linebacker Pete Burgard recovered a Hawkeye fumble in the end zone for the other TD.

A tough Iowa defense sacked Eason six times and ended his string of 300-yard-plus passing games at five. But the Hawkeyes were plagued by mistakes on offense. Starting quarterback Pete Gales was intercepted once and fumbled the ball away to Illinois three times. Iowa dropped to 3-2 in the Big Ten and slipped from first place. Illinois improved its conference record to 4-2 and remained within striking distance of Big Ten leader Ohio State.

Ohio St. 45, Purdue 33 WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Cedric Anderson set up one touchdown by blocking a Purdue punt and scored twice on passes of 47 and 23 yards from Art Schlichter Saturday, leading Ohio State to a 45-33 victory over the Boilermakers in a regionally televised Big Ten Conference game. The victory, keeping Ohio State in first place with a 4-1 Nebraska 31, Kansas 15 LINCOLN, Neb. Phil Bates ran for a pair of second-half touchdowns to lead 12th-ranked Nebraska to a 31-15 Big Eight Conference football victory over Kansas Saturday.

Bates scored both touchdowns in the third quarter on runs of two and three yards to offset a record-breaking performance by Kansas sophomore Bruce Kallmeyer. Kallmeyer booted five field goals from 25, 27, 49, 49 and 47 yards to keep the Jayhawks in the contest through three quarters. Kallmeyer bettered KU kicking marks set in 1975 by Dennis Kerbel, and his eighth field goal of the season topped the previous mark of seven held jointly by Bob Helmbacher, Kallmeyer and Mike Hubach. Nebraska gained the lead for good on Bates' second touchdown with 2:03 remaining in the third period. Sophomore quarterback Turner Gill hit tight end Jamie Williams on a 17-yard touchdown and Mike Rozier raced 49 yards for an insurance touchdown in the final period.

Ro2ier carried the ball 22 times for 179 yards in the contest. Michigan 34, Minnesota 13 MINNEAPOLIS Quarterback Steve Smith passed for 237 yards and three touchdowns Saturday as 15th-ranked Michigan drove past Minnesota 34-13 to remain in the running for the Big Ten football title and a Rose Bowl berth. Smith, who had completed only 39 5 percent of his passes this season, connected on 13 of 20 passes and rushed for 59 yards in 10 attempts.
