See You for the Best Deal on a New or Used Car or Truck! RV's Too! Al Cheney FORD 1999 Soquel Avenue Santa Cruz Dr. Maija Blauberg filed a sex discrimination case against the university last year and claimed she was refused tenure and promotion because of her activities in a women's studies program. The committee again refused her tenure and promotion by a 6-3 vote in February, and her attorney added that decision to the original suit. Six of the nine committee members told the judge how they voted, but Dinnan refused. Two others have not yet been asked how they voted, he said.

Dinnan said the real issue is not sex discrimination, but whether the court has a right to control the university. He said the secret ballot is "the right of the U.S. citizen. The next step is 'how did you vote in the last and 'you'd better not vote that way' and 'you'd better watch how you Dinnan first refused to divulge his vote to Ms. Blauberg's attorneys on April 23.

When he was brought before Owens June 2, he was given one day to reconsider his refusal. Owens sentenced Dinnan to three months in prison June 3 and fined him $100 a day until July 3. MACON, Ga. (AP) A University of Georgia professor, defiantly dressed in his academic hood and gown, has gone to jail for refusing to tell a judge how he voted on a faculty promotion that resulted in a sex discrimination suit. Dr.

James Dinnan said Thursday that U.S. District Judge Wilbur Owens was imprisoning the university system by sentencing him to three months in jail for contempt of court. "The courts have no right in the issues of the university system," he said. "They are not qualified to judge the issues and we are. We have direct authority from the state constitution." The 50-year-old professor surrendered to marshals at the federal courthouse here Thursday and was taken to Bibb County Jail, where he will stay until the Bureau of Prisons decides which federal facility will house him.

Dinnan, a specialist in adult education at the university, was cited for contempt of court and sentenced to three months in prison after he refused to tell Owens how he voted when a faculty promotion committee considered the case of a woman faculty member who was seeking a promotion. 14571136 VVVV1'VWVrtrtWVVVVVtrVVWVV "4 FICTITIOUS BUSINESS STATEMENT File No. The following person It doing buttnett at: HE ARTWOOD BUILDERS at 1201 El Rancno Santa Crui, CA 95O60. (AP) Despite some new rumbles, scientists said they did not expect any fireworks from Mount St. Helens as residents of the Pacific Northwest headed outdoors to celebrate the Fourth of July.

But federal officials warned holiday vacationers along the Columbia River not to use the sandy beaches along its banks because quicksand may lie beneath. The beaches were created by 23 million cubic yards of volcanic debris that swept down the river after the Mount St. Helens's devastating May 18 eruption. And in some spots, up to six feet of quicksand lies waiting beneath the thin crust. Seven small tremors described as type seismic events were recorded at the volcano between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m. PDT Thursday, said Bob Norris, spokesman for the University of Washington geophysics laboratory in Seattle. The seismic events are different from traditional earthquakes in that they are shallower and believed caused by glacial movement, avalanches or the cracking of crusted lava.

Norris said. However, scientists are puzzled because the rumblings are stronger than in recent weeks. Norris said. Most type seismic events have been less than 1 on the Richter scale, while some of those Thursday were larger than 1, he said. A quake of magnitude 2 on the Richter scale of ground movement is the smallest normally felt by humans.

Meanwhile, a steam plume wafted as high as 12,000 feet and drifted north toward Mount Rainier, where holiday weekend campers gathered, said Joseph Sears of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. There were no harmonic tremors, said Tim Hait, geologist for the U.S. Geological Survey. Those tremors indicate the movement of molten rock within the volcano and certain patterns of the tremors were a precursor for the mountain's three eruptions.
