Goble is charged with dealing in pharmaceutical cocaine, the purest form of the drug Gerulaitis' attorney, David Breitbart, has maintained Gerulaitis was "absolutely not involved in any narcotics conspiracy." In his summation, defense lawyer Jack Litman said Goble was not at the center of any conspiracy involving cocaine. Litman said Drug Enforcement Administration agent Jeffrey Hall "was trying to make a case against Vitas Gerulaitis." The tennis star's name was "all over the place" on tape recordings made by government agents, the lawyer said Gerulaitis' voice did not appear on any of the tapes, however. A government witness, Richard Purvis, an admitted cocaine dealer, said during the trial before Judge Kevin Duffy that Gerulaitis was interested in contributing $20,000 toward a $144,000 cocaine purchase. Also during the trial, Hall testified that agents had followed Gerulaitis on the final day of the Volvo Masters tournament last Jan. 17 at Madison Square Garden.

But none arrived faster than the ones he caught in downtown San Diego. Bevacqua caught five consecutive balls dropped from the roof of the city's newest skyscraper Tuesday, missing the sixth when he attempted a behind-the-back grab. Dropped from 325 feet, the baseball was believed to be exceeding 100 MPH by the time it reached Bevacqua "It was harder to catch than a line drive but it wasn't so tough I couldn't handle it," said Bevacqua, who was cheered by approximately 600 persons who turned out to watch the noon-hour charity stunt.

On his only miss, the ball ricocheted off his glove, hit the asphalt and bounced up two stories before a spectator hauled it in. The baseballs were tossed down from the newly-completed Imperial Bank Building by Padres' catcher Terry Kennedy. For his efforts, Bevacqua was given a $1,000 check to be donated in his name to his favorite charity.
