Dc 14, mO THE SUN C-8- Fouts shatters two records as Chargers whip Seahawks Redskins capture battle for last place 7 Auooa'ed Press i 3 i 'J. 1 number of dropped passes in the first two quarters," Fouts' explosive passing helped the Chargers set another all-time mark with three receivers in the same season. Trior to the game, Kellen Winslow and John Jefferson had reached that plateau, and wide receiver Charlie Joiner joined with a first-period reception. After a scoreless opening quarter, San Diego struck for all of its points in the second period on runs of 1 and 10 yards by Chuck Muncie and Fouts' 19-yard touchdown pass to Jefferson. Seattle scored in the third quarter and after time expired in the game after a pass interference penalty.

San Diego marched inside Seattle's 10-yard line twice in the first quarter, but Seahawks' cornerback Kerry Justin intercepted Fouts in the end zone and linebacker Michael Jackson recovered a Muncie fumble at the 7. Seattle's only first half threat came early in the game when the Seahawks drove to the San Diego 19, but a penalty against quarterback Jim Zorn for intentionally grounding the ball cost 10 yards and Efren Herrera's 47-yard field goal attempt was wide to the left. San Diego went ahead 7-0 at the outset of the second quarter on a 71-yard, 10-play drive that ended with Muncie's 1-yard plunge. Muncie, atoning for his ninth fumble since joining the Chargers Sept. 28, made it 144 nine minutes later after San Diego took over at the Seattle 48 following a punt.

Associated Press SAN DIEGO Quarterback Dan Fouts continued his assault on National Football League passing records Saturday, and after setting a pair of all-time marks, he handed the credit to some unsung coworkers. "One man's not receiving enough credit, and that's Joe Gibbs, our offensive coordinator," said the San Diego Chargers' QB, who broke his own single-season mark with 4,407 yards passing so far this year and also broke the NFL mark for 300-yard games by surpassing that level for the seventh time. Fouts completed 28 of 42 passes for 339 yards to propel the Chargers to a 21-14 victory over Seattle and extend the Seahawks' losing streak to eight games. The victory left the Chargers 10-5 and improved their chances of repeating as AFC West champions. If the Chargers and Oakland Raiders wind up tied with 11-5 records at the end of the season, the tiebreaking procedure that will take effect will be net points in the division.

Oakland needs to beat Denver by 27 points today to catch San Diego in that department. The Chargers finish up the season a week from Monday against Pittsburgh, while Oakland travels to New York to meet the Giants a week from Sunday. "I think it's good that we play Pittsburgh on the last game of the season, so we can find out how good our football team really is," Chargers defensive tackle Louie Kelcher said. After the Chargers scored all their points in the second period, Seattle scored once in the third quarter and again in the fourth to close the point gap and ease some of the pressure on Oakland. "I would prefer to forget the first half," said Seattle coach Jack Patera.

"Our offense had an inordinate I WASHINGTON After warming the bench for the past six games, Washington halfback Bobby Hammond was starting to wonder hether he'd ever play igain. Now it's the New York Giants the team which cut him a year ago who would just as soon he'd not suit up. I Though Hammond was barely on the Redskins depth chart, coach Jack Pardee, trailing 1W), decided io start him in the second half Saturday and the 170-fcounder responded. Hammond's clutch running and game-winning 7-yard touchdown pass from Joe Theismann with 39 seconds remaining gave the Washington Redskins a 16-13 victory in the battle for last place in the NFC past. "We weren't getting production from anybody else," said Pardee.

"Bobby had a good week of practice, so we decided to go with him. He was up for Jhe Giants." Hammond's running set up Washington's first touchdown, an 11 -yard burst by fullback Clarence Harmon on the first series of the third quarter. Then ft was his catch of TheLsmann's pass in front of Brad Van Pelt that wrapped up the contest for Washington. "I needed to know that I still have the ability to play," said Hammond. "1 think I'm still a game-breaker." 1 The winning TD came seven minutes after Joe Danelo had kicked a 35-yard field goal, giving the Giauts a 13-10 edge.

In the Central Division, the Cleveland Browns can assure themselves of first place with a victory over the Minnesota Vikings, provided that the Houston Oilers lose in Green Bay. In the Western Division, the San Diego Chargers defeated Seattle on Saturday, and that win, coupled with a Denver victory over Oakland, could give the Chargers the crown. But Oakland can clinch a wild-card spot if the Patriots lose. In the National Conference, Minnesota will clinch the Central Division title if Detroit loses to St.

Louis or if the Vikings beat the Browns. The Atlanta Falcons can win the Western Division by beating San Francisco, or by watching the Rams lose to Dallas Monday night. Neither the Cowboys nor the Philadelphia Eagles, tied for first and scheduled to meet at Texas Stadium On Dec. 21, can clinch the NFC East, but both have qualified for a wild-card berth, as have the Falcons. Each conference's two wild-card playoff teams are those with the best records that failed to win their divisions.

In the American Conference the probable wild-card teams are the Raiders and the Oilers. The chances of the defending league champions, the Pittsburgh Steelers, depend on their beating Kansas City and then San Diego in the final Monday night game. In the National Conference, the wild-card teams till be the loser of the Dallas-Philadelphia game, and most likely the Rams, with the Lions as lesser candidates.
