She also is survived by two sisters. Dorothy Scott of Campbell and Barbara Bibbins of Arkansas. Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Irvin Smith and Sons Chapel of the Four Seasons, 1050 Cayuga with the Native Daughters of the Golden West officiating. Private cremation will be at Soquel Crematory.

Virena A. Pendergast Private services will be conducted Friday for Virena A. Pendergast, a native of Hollister, who died Monday at her Santa Cruz home. Mrs. Prendergast, 90, had lived in the Santa Cruz area since 1930.

Survivors include her daughter, Rea Prendergast of Santa Cruz and several nieces and nephews. The services will take place at the IOOF Cemetery in Santa Cruz at 2 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Alexander Anderson, rector emeritus of Calvary Episcopal Church. officiating.

The sultry, honey-blond actress often portrayed other woman' in movies of the 1940s and 1950s. There were conflicting reports on her age, although she was in her early 50s.

Miss Grahame entered St. Vincent's Hospital here Monday and died that evening. The nature of her illness was not disclosed. Born in Pasadena, she started acting in Hollywood soon after graduating from high school. Miss Grahame appeared in about 30 films, including and "It's a Wonderful Life." It was in 1952 that she won her Academy Award for The Bad and the Beautiful.

She also was nominated for an Oscar for her supporting roles in the films "Crossfire" and Greatest Show on Earth One of her last professional appearances was in the play "Light Up the Sky" last summer in East Hampton. N.Y Miss Grahame was married and divorced four times. Her husbands included actor Stanley Clements, film director Nicholas Ray, television producer Cy Howard and Anthony Ray, stepson of her second husband. Survivors include her mother and four children. Crime Report Man Tossed Off Bridge During Fight A 37-vear-old man was arrested Tuesday after he threw another man off a bridge into Soquel Creek 40 feet below.

Officers said they first contacted Goodwin on Stockton Avenue near the wharf after citizens reported seeing two men fighting. Goodwin told police that he and his brother were just having a friendly. tussle and that there was no problem. One officer left the area and a second went to contact the witness who called in the report. said officers.

A short time later. the officer heard a noise and spotted Goodwin throwing Alari off the bridge into Soquel Creek below. said reports. Officers said the drop was about 40 feet. Police took Goodwin into custody, but he became angry and kicked out the window of the patrol car.

According to reports, a car belonging to Vivian Ellis caught fire in the carport of her home. It was extinquished by firemen, but Ellis reported seeing two persons running from the area shortly before her car caught fire. Deputies reported a smell of gas in the area and Ellis said her car's door was open when the fire started. Deputies and firemen initially thought the fire was caused by the car's battery, but the blaze is under investigation. Burglars broke into Continental Liquors, 7486 Soquel Drive.

Hemmer, who died here Tuesday, was born in New York City and was a staff photographer for the New York Daily News for many years. He was first president of the New York Press Photographers Association and later official photographer for the state of North Carolina. Hemmer's close friend. Hugh Morton, said he had never officially retired, but blindness forced him to give up photography in 1970. He had lived in the Pinehurst Nursing Center since 1971.

Morton said Hemmer received the Sprague Award. the National Press Photographer Association's highest honor in 1951, for contributions to news photography. Morton said Hemmer covered many historical events in his career. including the takeoff of Charles Lindbergh on his Atlantic flight. John said when Lindbergh got ready to take off, he didn't have any food with him.

Morton said. "So John passed the hat to buy Lindy sandwiches and coffee. 'He was really a grand fellow." said Morton. "He was always thinking of others and not A funeral will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Friday. Hemmer is survived by a son.

Los Gatos. home of Nancy Schallen and took a television set. said sheriff's reports today. Scotts Valley Police have arrested a Scotts Valley man on suspicion of burglarizing two businesses. Taken into custody Monday at his residence at 6033 Scotts Valley Drive was Scott Irving Tallmadge, 23.

He is accused of stealing a giant screen TV from Geno's Pizza on Sept. 7 and some $1.900 in cash and receipts from Scotts Valley Chevron in an earlier burglary. Most of the receipts from the service station were located at Tallmadge's residence, according to police. Investigators said they had developed Tallmadge as a suspect in the pizza parlor burglary but had been unable to locate him. On Monday.

they said. a citizen provided information which led them to Tallmadge and evidence which linked him to the Chevron station burglary. Santa Cruz Police arrested two 15- year -old girls Tuesday on suspicion of burglary. The two girls were arrested at Harbor High and were booked into Juvenile Hall. They are accused of entering a house on May Avenue on Sept.

Kern County Sets Record BAKERSFIELD (AP) The value of oil and minerals produced in Kern County more than doubled in 1980.
