skills in winter baseball Continued from page 1U than five years ago make it to the majors and in time for his grandfather Otis McNeely 79 to see him play "My grandfather has always served as my inspiration to make it to the big leagues" McNeely said recently during his four-day swing through Monroe that included meeting family and friends at Monroe High "He always talked about not being around to see me in the major leagues "I wanted to make it to the majors this year I was going to do whatever I had to to get there so he could see me play" he said On Sept 1 the day major-league teams were allowed to expand their rosters to 40 players Boston picked five players from its Class AAA Pawtucket (RI) team including McNeely an outfielder with a reputation for speed and power The Boston papers had predicted McNeely would be called but he hesitated telling his family fearing the papers were wrong The announcement made McNeely's bumpy and often unpredictable road to the majors finally seem a little smoother Following his years at Monroe High McNeely proved to be a solid player but didn't attract many scouts he enrolled at Spartanburg Methodist Junior College where his speed and hitting blossomed Boston picked him in the second round of the 1989 draft McNeely played Class A ball for nearly three years then spent last season at Class AA New Britain (Conn) before making Boston's 40-man spring training roster this season and being sent down to Class AAA Pawtucket following the final preseason cut He started the year slowly with the PawSox a member of baseball's International League but by mid-season was hitting 306 and got the attention of Boston's front office When Boston finally called the team wasted little time in introducing the 6-2 190-pound center fielder to big-league ball McNeely flew to Boston right away leaving behind his clothes his car his batting glove and cleats and arrived in time for Boston's day game with the Kansas City Royals in Fenway Park "Everything happened so fast" McNeely said "It was like boom you're on the plane to Boston I didn't even have a chance to break my cleats in I had a new batting glove and everything I owned was back in Rhode Island" In the eighth inning of the Red Sox-Royals game McNeely was called to pinch run for Andre Dawson who had reached first base As McNeely jogged from the Red Sox dugout to first base the Boston faithful cheered and he stood on base wondering what might happen next He didn't wait long On the very next pitch the third base coach signaled McNeely to steal second "I said to myself 'Man it's the first It didn't matter His speed 385 seconds from home to first carried him safely to second Another ovation from the crowd McNeely played in Boston's final 21 games of the 1993 season and amassed impressive credentials he hit 291 and had a 409 on-base percentage He stole six bases in six attempts He made critical catches in games in Toronto and Cleveland When McNeely returned recently to Monroe before heading to Arizona to play winter baseball he said he finally realized what he had accomplished "Seeing my parents and friends things have changed so fast My maturity level the game of baseball people you play against the level of competition they've all changed" he said Not much had changed at Monroe High where McNeely spent one afternoon meeting with students and former teachers all wanting to meet the school's first "big-leaguer" "It was good going back I tried to tell them that hard work and determination and having goals will pay off in the long run" McNeely said "It has for me" McNeely hasn't been told a lot about next season with Boston other than "no promises" "I know that 21 games does not a 160-plus season make But I also know what I can do Here I am 23 years old and I've already accomplished my goal to play in the major leagues Now I want to stay there and make a new goal to be a superstar in the majors" McNeely stops for a moment and laughs "If I never ever play another day in the big leagues I will know I accomplished my goal" he says "There aren't many people who can say that and not many at all at my age" LOWEST
