championship 281 points By TOM HIGGINS Staff Writer BROOKLYN Mich Ordinarily Mark Martin would be an overwhelming favorite at Michigan International Speedway this weekend both in Champion Spark Plug 400 qualifying Friday and in the race Sunday Martin who drives for Ford led 141 of 200 laps in the Miller Genuine Draft 400 at the 2-mile track in June before fuel mileage forced him to pit Martin giving the victory to Chevrolet's Ricky Rudd Also Martin rolls into Michigan buoyed by a victory from the pole Sunday in The Budweiser At The Glen on the Watkins Glen (NY) International road course down to Dale Earnhardt thinks Martin is being too modest about his chances Joked Jarrett this week: "What Goodyear should do is also bring a few sets of its old radials to Michigan I think they should give Mark the old ones and everyone else the new tires That might even things up if these new radials are as fast as everyone says going to be" Martin incidentally is fourth in the standings 384 points down to Earnhardt There's always extra pressure in NASCAR races at Michigan because of the proximity to Detroit and the US auto hierarchy intensified this time because all three makes competing on the Winston Cup tour have a chance at the NASCAR Championship After 19 of the 30 races Chevy leads with 1 35 points to 1 1 4 for Ford Pontiac making its strongest showing in years thanks to five victories and another by Kyle Petty is third with 1 12 points Ford took the title last year ending a nine-year Chevy reign Qualifying for the Detroit Gasket 200 the second Grand National event at the Michigan speedway begins activity at the track today The 100-lap race is Saturday The 200 is as important to the Grand National regulars as the 400 is to their Winston Cup counterparts The thinking: a solid performance will stick in the minds of motorsports executives perhaps providing a boost when the competitor seeks to move up to the major circuit Todd Bodine won the Grand National inaugural at
