STAN OLSON Staff Writer Joel Holliday is a freshman offensive tackle at Alabama He is being redshirted this season and has yet to play a down for the Crimson Tide No matter to those who worship it Holliday is already part of Alabama football go out on a date and four or five people might want your autograph or to say said Holliday who attended Daniel (SC) High near Clemson you go people know who you are and who you play for being redshirted and they still know my number Most schools nobody would even know who I was yet just love football University of Alabama football South Carolina fans get to see what all the hubbub is about Saturday when the defending national champion Crimson Tide brings its 27-game winning streak to Wil-liams-Brice Stadium to meet the Gamecocks in SEC play No 2 Alabama is the premier college football program in the premier college football league in America everything South Carolina fans hope their program will be someday The Crimson Tide has been playing football since 1892 and has compiled a record of 682-234-43 That is the third-high-est victory total in college football behind Michigan and Notre Dame Along the way the Tide has had 23 seasons of 10 or more wins (South Carolina has one) Alabama has collected 12 national titles And won more bowl games (25) than any other school Such continued excellence inspires the greatest loyalty borders on said Barry Allen of the Alabama sports information department here goes to church on Sunday and goes to see Alabama play on Saturday People will call national championship victory over Miami last season But Alabama football had strong tradition even before the Bear going back to 1925 when future cowboy movie star Johnny Mack Brown was a standout half back for the first national champion team and 1926 when Alabama became the first southern school to play in the Rose Bowl Wallace Wade later of Duke fame starred for the Tide as did former Clemson coach Frank Howard Bryant of course took the school to its football peak capping his career by winning more games (103) in the 1970s than any school has ever won in a decade Now Stallings has returned the Tide to that peak although a wrench was thrown into all that Bama football happiness Thursday when the NCAA announced it would investigate the program over allegations that former player Gene Jelks was paid to play The players are pretty much ignoring that and concentrating on South Carolina which is 0-8 against Alabama The Gamecocks got a first-hand look at Stallings program last season when they were buried 48-7 in Tuscaloosa Holliday who picked Alabama over nearby Clemson said his new team is proud of the winning streak pushed to 27 with thrashing of Louisiana Tech a lot of pride in the he said of course pressure all we hear about If Alabama was to lose a game the fans know what to think Talk about the team is simply everywhere you go said Holliday start playing Home before the games and half the time you even hear it once the fans start yelling" Alabama football in April trying to plan a September or November wedding asking what time the gonna kick off They know if their the same time as the game lose a lot of friends" The cornerstone of this loyalty of course was Paul Bryant who coached the Tide from 1958 through '82 winning six national titles and averaging more than nine wins a season Bryant died a decade ago but his shadow still hangs over Tuscaloosa and in fact all of Alabama live in Bryant said Holliday drive down Bryant Avenue to go to practice and I go by the Bryant Museum on the way 1 eat in the Bryant Dining Hall and I play at Bryant-Denny Stadium Anyone who ever coaches here is gonna be in the shadow of coach Current Alabama coach Gene Stallings has now added some of his own lore to the tradition spicing it with that Sugar Bowl TD passes All-Star Center Adam Oates Superstar Eric Lindros VS Charlotte Putting People In Touch Putting People Rising The ice will be hot as the five
