About 30 persons daily, or 650 come to the new agency in its first month of operation, Derrick said.

A profit and loss statement from the auditor's office reportedly shows a total income of about $36.000 for the Health Services Agency that month, with a loss of about $13.000. But this loss will be offset by Medi Cal payments of up to $10.000 from the state later. If this loss is matched against the estimated $500.000 yearly loss for running General Hospital, Derrick said he calculates the taxpayers are saving $14.000 for that first month.
