20 Santa Cruz Sentinel Sunday, January 16, 1977 mm Ann Landers 'Coffee Break' Writer Breaks Up Audience Poem Says It All 1 i By BARBARA Bl'RKLO Sentinel Staff Writer Adeline Daley, whose humorous column. "Coffee appears twice weekly in the Chronicle, broke up her audience at Santa Cruz Woman's Club Thursday with an hilarious series of connected and disconnected one and two line anecdotes. They giggled in agreement when she said the reason so many women wear long dresses and pan-tsuits is because they all have runs in their pantyhose. They chuckled in sympathy when she said she can't make a good cup of coffee. They loved her household hints: If you're not a good housekeeper, keep the vacuum cleaner in the living room and the ironing board out at all times.

This makes a good impression. And, Adeline says she has a club for compulsive string and grocery bag savers you call another member when the urge becomes too strong. "If you're in this club long enough, you'll get to the point where you can even throw away mayonaisse she quipped. Another tip from Adeline never throw out a gift box from I. Magnin's.

It can be used over and over, exchanged back and forth among family members, but always containing a gift purchased at Walgreen's. Turning to self-improvement, Adeline asked her audience to take stock. "The last time you got dressed up to go down town, did your children ask you, 'Who "On your last birthday, did someone give you a flannel nightie with pink rosebuds, with the idea that this suited you? "When you travel, do your health remedies outweigh your cosmetics?" Introduced by Mrs. Chester Laubscher, Adeline immediately explained why she wasn't wearing eye makeup, although her daughters think it is an absolute must. "The truth of the matter," she said, "Is that I'm allergic to eye makeup.

It makes me look sexy but bloodshot." Adeline has been writing her column for 10 years, but only recently became acquainted with the staff members at the Chronicle. She's always worked at home, mailing or sending her column in. But when the paper went over to a new system, she began going down to type it on the necessary scanner paper. She's the mother of seven children, four of whom still live at home and one of whom continues to bring home her laundry. Educated at the University of Minnesota, Adeline came to San Francisco during World War II and got a job as a sportswriter on the San Francisco Call Bulletin.

She occupied the desk of Walt Daley, a sportswriter in the service, and when he returned, she married him. He claims he married her to get his job back. After staying home to rear her large family, she was persuaded by family and friends to write some of the humorous happenings that occur when bringing up a large family. Her articles have appeared in many national magazines. Dear Ann Landers: Not being an all-out.

bra-burning Women's Libber, but a young wife who is anxious to see the ERA ratified, I ran across a poem that says it all. Will you please print it? Woman was made from the rib of man. She was not created from his head to "top him. Nor from his feet to be stepped on. She was made from his side to be equal to him.

From beneath his arm to be protected by him. Near his heart to be loved by him. Unsigned From Saginaw Dear Unsigned: Lovely. Thank you for sharing it with my readers. Dear Ann: I'd like to say a word to "irritated in Michigan" who accused you of being a bigot because you said, "No one has to go through life with kinky hair these days unless he wants to." I am a white, Anglo-Saxon.

Protestant female, born with very curly hair, which I proudly wear in an Afro. My white friends call me "Wasp," my black friends call me "Soul Sister." We all agree it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside, but what's on the inside that counts. Anyone who reads your column should know what you are like on the inside. It comes through loud and clear. You don't need to be defended.

The person who wrote that letter is overly sensitive to his or her "ethnic" characteristics. I believe a little soul-searching is in order. Your Sister And Yours And Yours ADELINE DALEY You're Invited to Open House at Pediatric Treatment Center Dear Sis: Thanks for the up-front response. Dozens of readers wrote to express the same point of view but you said it best. COPYRIGHT 1977 FIELD ENTERPRISES, INC.
