Roberts 1 run (Shirley kick) Bradley 5 pass from Jones (Richter kick) 13404 (at Furman) By REID SPENCER Special Correspondent GREENVILLE SC On the strength of an accurate quickscoring passing game and a time-consuming fourth-quarter drive Western Carolina edged Furman 29-27 in a crucial Southern Conference football game Saturday at Gene Stone Field The victory pulled the Catamounts (6-3 4-1) into a tie with The Citadel for the conference lead Appalachian upset victory over Marshall dropped the Thundering Herd to 4-2 in the conference For the Paladins (5-4 3-3) it was a story of early opportunities "That penalty was a touchy call" Tremble said guys were on the field I guess and it got us out of a possible two-point situation" As a result Furman trailed 22-20 with 12:33 left and after an exchange of possessions Western Carolina began a 15-play 79-yard touchdown drive that consumed six minutes 30 seconds And though Furman responded with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jones to Bradley with 29 seconds left it failed to gain possession of the ensuing onside kick attempt W'estern needed but one play to ensure its first victory over Furman in five years completed 14 of 17 pass attempts for 194 yards and two touchdowns including a 47-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Kerry Hayes Under enormous pressure from a Furman blitz Galloway hit Hayes over the middle to give the Catamounts an apparently decisive 22-6 lead with five minutes 30 seconds left in the third quarter blitzed and we had the quarterback hit but they made the play" Paladins coach Jimmy Satterfield said Nevertheless Furman answered quickly with a six-play 67-yard drive scored on a touchdown pass from quarterback Philly Jones to tight end Tate Waters and added a Campbell rallies Appalachian past Thundering Herd squandered an inopportune penalty with bizarre consequences and a late rally that ended with an unsuccessful onside kick attempt on the next-to-last play For Furman running back Carl Tremble it was a severe disappointment barely tempered by a 126-yard rushing performance that increased his career total to 4345 yards second only to all-time conference leader John Settle of Appalachian State who totaled 4645 yards in his career (1983-86) For Western Carolina quarterback Lonnie Galloway it was an afternoon of remarkable efficiency and one big-league play Galloway sparked the Gamecocks with a touchdown on a kickoff return and a late interception said "We knew not a classy team We knew they would try to intimidate us they did it last year They were real dirty They hit you late and took cheap The Bulldogs (5-4) also would have won but for a superb second-half effort by South defense and their own penchant for penalties Louisiana Tech out-gained South Carolina 380 yards to 1 1 8 but was penalized 1 4 times for 136 yards including seven holding calls And on a day when Steve Taney-hill South dazzling freshman quarterback found his offense stuck in the mud it was left to that defense and the special teams to salvage their fourth straight win Birthday boy Adams (he turned 22) jump-started his team After a field goal gave Louisiana Tech a 10-0 lead late in the first half Adams dropped back to field the kickoff As he waited he was yelling at the nearby fans "1 must be psychic" he said with a grin told the people in the crowd that 1 was gonna run it two-point conversion on a pass from Jones to split end David Stamey to make the score 22-14 On the first play of the next possession Jones hit reserve tailback Billy Whitley along the left sideline and Whitley streaked 86 yards for a touchdown the third longest touchdown pass in Furman history But an overzealous celebration on the sideline resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty Furman was forced to attempt what could have been a tying two-point conversion from the 18-yard line and inside pass to wide receiver Damon Brad-lev fell incomplete end the brawl and both teams conduct penalties victory untouched And South Carolina (4-5) led 14-13 It remained that way Boniol missed a 47-yard field goal with five minutes 55 seconds left and when the Bulldogs drove again inside the final minute it was Adams again intercepting Ferguson at the South Carolina 32 When it was over it was the defensive players who paraded along the hedge behind the south end zone slapping hands with a crush of fans And possibly remembering that brawl which erupted when South Cedric Surratt and Louisiana Andy Boyd began shoving each other after a punt Both teams stormed the field and numerous punches were thrown before order was restored "Their bench cleared so I felt our bench should clear said South Carolina co-captain Antoine Rivens South Carolina coach Sparky Woods said it turned out to be pretty heated But he complaining know who won the he said "but glad we won the game" Brawl game: Players from South Carolina and Louisiana Tech fight Saturday in the first half of the 14-13 victory at use pounds out 14-13 Observer News Services HUNTINGTON WVa DJ Campbell threw an 8-yard scoring pass to Ray Gama with 8 seconds remaining Saturday to lift Appalachian State to a 37-34 victory over Marshall The score climaxed a 15-play 72-yard drive for Appalachian State (5-4 4-2) that included two big conversions On third and 7 Campbell hit Gama for 12 yards setting up a first down at 31 Three plays later on fourth and 1 at the 22 tailback JK Reaves burst through the middle for 4 yards It was second straight loss for Marshall (6-3 4-2) and the first in its stadium which opened last fall It was not tough calling the last play said Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore had to throw it A run used Campbell too much Moore said Said Gama: had run the play a couple of times before It was one-on-one coverage The defensive back was behind me He (Campbell) threw a perfect Appalachian State trailed 21-17 at halftime But Campbell threw scoring passes of 16 and 24 yards to Gama and Anthony Smith in the third period to rally the Mountaineers But the Thundering Herd which had been unbeaten in the Southern Conference before last 38-30 loss at Western Carolina was not through Payton hit Troy Brown with a 31 -yard touchdown pass to narrow the gap And Marshall recaptured the lead 34-30 with a 60-yard pass from Michael Payton to fullback Glenn Pedro Payton was 25 of 34 for 432 yards passing but Marshall was held to 62 yards rushing knew it was going to be hard Marshall has a talented football Moore said knew we were going to have to score a lot of points to win Marshall has a great offense The only way to win was in the last seconds of the game Marshall coach Jim Donnan gave credit to Appalachian State came in here and did what they had to do in order to win You have got to give them credit for taking the ball the length of the field with the clock running down in our he said "They made the plays they needed to and we Donnan said Appalachian State turned the tide just before halftime after a disputed call Campbell threw an 8-yard pass to Smith but Brown who was in the game as a defensive back appeared to intercept But Smith came up with the ball setting up a quarterback sneak by Campbell with 27 seconds left in the first half Appalachian State controlled the ball for seven minutes more than Marshall Appalachian St 0 17 6 Marshall 6 IS 0 13-34 Carter 40 pass from the theme from Louisiana players were waiting for them Taunting and yelling and pointing at them And things sort of went downhill from there in an ugly game that spawned a full-fledged brawl at one point in the first half By the time it was over South Carolina had escaped with a 14-13 victory and both teams were left with bitter feelings According to Bulldogs All-American tackle Willie Roaf Louisiana Tech came out at the same time as South Carolina before the game because the Gamecocks had asked them not to "It was intimidation" he said sent us a letter asking us not to come out when they come out But we come out when we wanna come out We take any crap" Cornerback Frank Adams who Columbia Police officers helped were assessed unsportsmanlike all the way back" He did breaking free and darting 91 yards up the right sideline Even though Louisiana Tech got a second Chris Boniol field goal before the break South Carolina was in striking distance at 13-7 Then the defense took over They held the Bulldogs again and again Louisiana Tech had just 102 second-half yards and came up with big plays when needed intercepting four passes The biggest came late in the third quarter Bulldogs quarterback Aaron Ferguson under pressure threw one up the right sideline and into the hands of massive 290-pound freshman lineman Mike Washington never had an he said was thinking miss He and like a tractor-trailer rig slowly shifted gears and headed toward the end zone Then suddenly he lateraled to Ernest Dixon was coming to tackle me and Ernest was yelling for it the whole Washington said Dixon
