THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Sunday October 25 1992 9D COLLEGE FOOTBALL Terps pull stunning win out of Blue Devils clouds By REID SPENCER Special Correspondent Stadium With Maryland (2-6 1-4) trailing 25-21 with four seconds left in the game Kaleo took the snap from the Duke 38 and lofted a soft high pass toward the right corner of the end zone Badgett stepped in front of Blue Devils defender Jamal Ellis and made a leaping catch for the winning touchdown That play was the culmination of a four-play drive that covered 89 yards in the final 24 seconds On the previous play Badgett had made an even more spectacular 5 1 -yard catch of a tipped ball to set up the winning score ball looked like it went up and touched the Badgett said of the final pass looked so of the remaining time before surrendering the ball to Maryland on a Tim Davis punt Kaleo began the final drive at the 11 and threw two incomplete passes before connecting with Badgett on the 51-yard play ball was tipped around a little bit" Badgett said "I grabbed it and got out-of-bounds as quick as 1 could I knew there wasn't much time left" In catching nine passes for 218 yards Badgett established two Maryland season records: for most catches in a season (61 this year) and most receiving yardage in a season (1016 thus far) left appeared to have assured the Blue Devils of their first ACC victory this year were running their nohuddle in the first half they were a lot quicker than we thought they were and we reacting quickly enough But the second half had to be as good as played" "We play perfect all day but we put ourselves in position to win" said Cuthbert whose 101-yard rushing performance was critical to comeback still believe how it happened just shocked" After interception at 3:48 Duke used all but 24 seconds back and 1 knew if I threw it high he could go up and get it was a miracle play a backyard play" The heroics of Kaleo and Badgett negated a second-half comeback that saw Duke (2-5 0-4) rally to take a 25-21 lead on a 2-yard plunge by running back Randy Cuthbert with six minutes 45 seconds left in the game After giving up three touchdowns in the first half the Blue defense dominated the prolific Terrapins offense until the final few seconds second half it had to be some of the best defense we played all year" said Duke linebacker Scott Berdan whose interception of a Kaleo pass with 3:48 small and it seemed like it was taking forever to come down The D-back (Ellis) was excited too and 1 think he tried to jump too early and fell" Ellis said he felt a shove in the back but no penalty was called "Actually I ran the wrong route" Badgett said had worked on this kind of play a little in practice on Thursday and 1 was supposed to go down the middle and tip the ball But 1 thought 1 might be able to get single coverage on the outside and John (Kaleo) saw me" "After we completed the first pass they knew what we were going to Kaleo said looked over to the right and saw Marcus just him and that little corner- Passing game helps Tide roll by Rebels SEC standings DURHAM Maryland quarterback John Kaleo called it a Wide receiver Marcus Badgett admitted he ran the wrong pattern What resulted was and according to many bound for a dismal 0-11 season Now the Gamecocks are on a winning streak South Carolina won its second straight SEC game Saturday afternoon coming from two touchdowns behind to top Vanderbilt 21-17 In the process the Gamecocks snapped a school-record nine-game road losing streak And when it was over while the 3500 Gamecocks fans who made the trip still whooped it up in the good South Carolina co-defensive coordinator Miles Aldridge said just settled down a little more" They also began sticking to their assignments stringing out the option and preventing slick Vanderbilt quarterback Marcus Wilson from turning the play upfield The 3500 of those Gamecocks fans stood and cheered until Woods reappeared for a curtain call When he walked back onto the field they cheered louder And a grinning Woods responded by waving and pointing at them for a minute or so before rejoining his team in the locker room He was still smiling 45 minutes later talking with a few reporters after his team was loaded on its buses for the trip home Someone asked him if he felt he had looked into the abyss as the pressure had built but Woods insisted he just kept doing his job control the Gamecocks back Taneyhill the long-haired freshman with the quick release and quicker mouth continues to pump up his team with his limitless confidence Saturday he made the big plays for the second
