Following his election, President Carter mentioned a "new spirit" and limited resources in his speeches both themes Brown harped on while campaigning against Carter for the Democratic nomination. The exchange on the presidency was one of the more serious comments Brown made made in the outdoor interview about 1,600 people mostly middle aged women looked on and applauded repeatedly.

In fact, Brown, a perceptive student of the media, later told one reporter Tuesday that he knew that he hadn't said anything new during the interview.
