The 32-year-old York, a part-time actor, was arrested after he reportedly claimed responsibility for the killings in a rambling telephone call to police. But officers said they had turned up no concrete evidence by Thursday linking him to the killings. York, an extremely religious man who was separated from his wife three weeks ago, was booked for investigation of murder in the death of 20-year-old Kristina Weckler, the strangler's ninth victim.

He is the first person ever booked in the Hillside Strangler case, although more than a dozen others have been questioned. Three other persons reportedly have confessed to the killings, but police dismissed their claims.
