Hooper recognized Thomson as the man who had been driving the car, approached him and told him he was under arrest.

Thomson allegedly slammed the door in the officers' face, went and got a .41 caliber magnum pistol, opened the door again and fired several shot's, hitting Hooper in the face and Brush in the shoulder. The gunman then ran into a neighbor's home, allegedly told them he had just shot a policeman. He told the residents he wanted them to drive him away but then he heard sirens and fled into another nearby home. There he again allegedly admitted he had shot a policeman and indicated he wanted to sur- violator, according to Homicide Inspector Ed Erdelatz. Last year Hooper was shot in the chest by someone he stopped on the road, but was saved by his bullet-proof vest.

Thursday's fatal bullet struck him in the head. Homicide Inspector Ed Erdelatz gave this account of the incident: Hooper saw Thomson driving recklessly Thursday night and pursued him but Thomson sped away and eluded the officer. However, Hooper remembered the car's license plate and traced it to Hooper's 48th Avenue residence. He and Lt. Brush found the car parked out in front and began to impound it when Thomson came to the door, and SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A 34-year-old unemployed waiter, described by friends as despondent over the recent death of his roommate, was in custody today for investigation of fatally shooting a motorcycle officer who had pursued him for a routine traffic violation.

Robert Thomson, of San Francisco, is charged with murdering police Officer Robert Hooper, of Novato, and wounding Lt. Michael Brush in front of the suspect's Sunset District home Thursday night, police said. Brush, who was shot in the shoulder, was reported in good condition at Mission Emergency Hospital. It was the second time Hooper was shot by a traffic Difficult Decision Facing LA Police turned up nothing to tie him to the case, police Cmdr. William Booth said, although officers did confiscate what they said appeared to be a small quantity of potent marijuana concentrate, commonly known as Thai stick.

Friends of York told reporters that the actor had been up all night Tuesday talking with a friend about Miss Weckler before he called police. Booth said York apparently was suffering from "mental exhaustion" when he called police. York was described by a friend, Bill Devroe, as "very religious. "Everything was 'God bless you' and 'Jesus loves he said. York's auto had a sticker reading "Peace With Christ" and the license plate frame said "Read the Bible." The license itself was RE 3:20, an apparent biblical reference to Revelation 3:20.

LOS ANGELES (AP) Only two days after arresting Ned T. York in the 12 Hillside Strangler killings, police faced a difficult decision of whether to formally arraign him on murder charges. The 32-year-old York, a part-time actor, was arrested after he reportedly claimed responsibility for the killings in a rambling telephone call to police. But officers said they had turned up no concrete evidence by Thursday linking him to the killings. York, an extremely religious man who was separated from his wife three weeks ago, was booked for investigation of murder in the death of 20-year-old Kristina Weckler, the strangler's ninth victim.

He is the first person ever booked in the Hillside Strangler case, although more than a dozen others have been questioned. Three other persons reportedly have confessed to the killings, but police dismissed their claims. FRESNO (AP) Police here said a 14-year-old boy tipped them off in the apparently senseless kidnapping and murder of a Modesto woman whose body was found southeast of here.

Officers said the boy, a resident of nearby Pinedale, was among five arrested in the kidnapping and murder of Theresa Graybeal, 21. Her body was found early Thursday in nearby Calwa, police aid. Mrs. Graybeal was kidnapped from the K-mart store parking lot in Modesto Wednesday by four people who apparently wanted her car, officers report.
