811 THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Monday October 5 1992 The gambler Bobby Rahal stands tall in Victory Lane after a gamble of fuel paid off in the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix in Nazareth Pa on Sunday By TOM HIGGINS Staff Writer NORTH WILKESBORO For the second time in two weeks a NASCAR Winston Cup Series race is going to be run a day late because of rain The TysonHolly Farms 400 at North Wilkesboro Speedway was postponed Sunday to today at 11 am because of rain that covered the Carolinas A week ago the Goody's 500 was delayed at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia ESPN plans to continue its live coverage of the 400-lap 250-mile event on the 625-mile track With rain pounding the area there never was a chance that NASCAR officials could get the cars on the speedway But they held to traditional optimism before declaring a rainout at 2:45 pm More rain is forecast for today If that should further delay the 25th of the season's 29 races the tentative plan is to run the 400 on Oct 18 That's an open date between the Mello Ye lio 500 next Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway and the AC Delco 500 on Oct 25 at NC Motor Speedway in Rockingham Several inches of rain poured down on the Brushy Mountains area of Wilkes County where one of NASCAR's oldest tracks is located As it fell veterans in the sport laughingly looked back to a similar situation a decade or so ago at the speedway where such drivers as Junior Johnson Dale Earnhardt Darrell Waltrip and Richard Petty have raced to so much NASCAR history About noon on a Saturday the skies opened up like they did Sunday Overnight it flooded the area The ground became so saturated with water that red Terrapins roll over Pitt for Duffner's first win Observer News Services COLLEGE PARK Md John Ka leo threw for a school-record 415 yards Saturday night as Maryland beat Pittsburgh 47-34 snapping a nine-game losing streak and giving coach Mark Duffner his first victory with the Terrapins Duffner was 60-5-1 in six years at Holy Cross before taking over at Maryland this season Using a run-and-shoot offense the Terrapins were averaging 440 yards in offense but had lost four straight This time Maryland roared back from deficits of 10-0 and 27-24 behind Ka leo who completed 24 of 37 passes three for touchdowns and ran for a score Piftsbutiph Maryland 10 3 14 7-34 1 10 14 10-47 Associated Press -1 SATURDAY'S GAMES games and ending a two-game losing streak Ole Miss handed Kentucky its 13th consecutive road defeat With the help of three Kentucky turnovers Ole Miss built a 17-0 lead in the first half a margin that could have been even larger had the Rebels not muffed three other scoring chances Samford 30 Western Carolina 6 Mike O'Neal kicked a 20-yard field goal that made him Samford's all-time leading scorer as the Bulldogs defeated visiting Western Carolina (2-2) O'Neal's record-setter came with 2:41 left in the third quarter He has scored 213 for Samford (4-1) breaking the old mark of 210 set by Brady Jones in 1988-90 Elon 10 Lenoir-Rhyne 7 Bon (3-1 1-1) held Lenoir-Rhyne (2-2 0-2) to 47 yards rushing and used a Troy Ford field goal in the fourth quarter to defeat the host Bears in a SAC game Lenoir-Rhyne's State 35 Livingstone 19 LaRome Kenney threw for 177 yards and three touchdowns to lead Virginia State's Trojans (2-3 2-1) at home in the MA Rahal ga Obeenfor News Sifrrvicos NAZARETH Pa Bobby Rahal played down the gamble not the importance of the win it brought "I don't think it was as big a gamble as it appeared" Rahal said Sunday after stretching his final tank of methanol fuel for 85 laps and beating Michael Andretti to the finish line in the Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix "On the other hand this win makes a tremendous amount of difference going into the last race I can't overemphasize how important it is to this team" The victory boosted Rahal who had lost the top spot by failing to finish the last two races back into the Indy Car PPG Cup point lead with only the Oct 18 race at Monterey Calif remaining on the 16-race schedule His fourth victory of the season third on a 1-mile oval and 24th of his career gave Rahal a I2-point (182-170) lead over defending series champion Andretti while Al Unser Jr finished I 1 th and slipped to third overall 17 points behind Rahal Emerson Fittipaldi finished three laps down in seventh and fell out of the championship battle Now all Rahal has to do is finish fourth or better at Monterey to clinch the title Robbie Buhl clinched the Firestone Indy Lights series championship leading wire-to-wire at Pennsylvania International Raceway Race washed out will run today worms and night crawlers had to come out of the earth to survive They crawled out on the asphalt pavement of the speedway They clogged drainpipes They slimed the track The sun came out at about mid-morning But there was no way NASCAR had no solution for a night crawler problem so the race was postponed North Wilkesboro Speedway President Enoch Staley vowed that day he'd solve his night crawler problem So he has arrested the trouble caused by the great fish bait But he still can't do anything about those clouds that roll in and cause the rain Today's lineup as
