Three minutes and one second into the schedule Wake Forest's Deacons were down 7-0 en route to a 35-17 defeat and a lot of us amateur psychologists were wondering what we could possibly have been thinking when we told each other there could be a big upset in this one See we had figured when Bill Dooley announced recently that this would be his last season as Wake Forest coach the Deacons who always froth at the mouth when they see North Carolina blue anyway would summon a superhuman effort for this one Season opener The hateful Tar Heels Dooley's last chance to beat them a team he used to coach People wearing "Do It For Dooley" buttons All the right stuff was in place Except football players The Deacons poured their sweat on the turf for school coach and glory all right but the Tar Heels gave it an effort befitting an opening game as well and did it with a lot more good players Players won Including glory be two quarterbacks who looked like quarterbacks a commodity that has been scarce in Chapel Hill in recent years Never in doubt As a result there was little of the suspense that had preceded the game It was 7-3 early but 21-3 at halftime For all the juicy possibilities it never took off just kind of unfolded under a drab gray sky in front of only 23447 people in a 31500-seat stadium At least half of whom by the way were North Carolina fans Inexperience showed in North Carolina's offensive line but other than that the Tar Heels looked solid They're better than they've been in a long time because among their wealth of talent they have two quarterbacks in Stanicek and Mike Thomas who can make them better rather than quarterbacks who hurt them As part of their preparation for the Deacons the Tar Heels themselves had engaged in a little mental underpinning It was the work of Dr Dick Coop who teaches sports psychology at North Carolina and ministers to the psyches of Tar Heels athletes as well as famous golfers like Payne Stewart Corey Pavin and Mark O'Meara Visualizing success Coop had the Tar Heels practice visualization Fullback Mike Faulkerson explained: "He had us visualize good things He wanted us to see ourselves dominating at our positions" It worked for Faulkerson Fullbacks aren't supposed to be stars They're supposed to make other people stars protecting the quarterback and running fakes and knocking holes for the running back And when the game's over they're supposed to be in the training room getting treatment for bruises and sprains while the stars talk to reporters As Faulkerson said "Fullbacks don't get many bones thrown to them But the big senior had his best day ever Saturday carrying 14 times for 56 yards and scoring three touchdowns Visualization? "I believe it did us a lot of good" he said Like the Tar Heels needed it They kept storing up yardage in good hefty chunks until they had 524 And they starved the Deacons with 261 Only one of Wake Forest's touchdowns was accomplished by the offense the other coming on defensive end Maurice Miller's interception return Miller said "It was good for us to play North Carolina early They'll find our weaknesses and we'll find theirs I guess today they found more' Yeah they did Someone asked Dooley what kind of emotions he had felt trying for the last time to beat North Carolina "You know" he said "I never thought about it Maybe a little later in the season I will" Southern 0 win the bonus raltrip wants Michael Waltrip outduels Dale Jarrett for a Grand National victory1 3D Waltrip knows all about the million bonus He had a chance to collect it in 1989 after taking the Daytona 500 and Charlotte's 600 But he misfired badly that Labor Day weekend at Darlington "I wanted it so bad not necessarily for the money but to win the Southern 500" said Waltrip who will start fifth in the Chevrolet he has taken to Victory Lane twice this season including Aug 29 in the Bud 500 at pm (ESPN) The prize goes to drivers winning three of the sport's Big Four races in the same season Allison put himself in position with victories in the Daytona and Winston 500s The other race that counts is the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte The $1 million has been won only once by Bill Elliott in 1985 the first year the prize was posted Elliott who lines up fourth in a Ford leads second-place Allison by 109 points toward another $1 million that's paid to the Winston Cup champion By TOM HIGGINS Staff Writer DARLINGTON SC Davey Allison may not be the only driver going for a $1 million bonus today in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway Darrell Waltrip says he will be too "My car owner he's pretty proud of the way I'm running right now says he's going to give me a million dollars if I win this race" Waltrip said Waltrip is his own car owner Among NASCAR Winston Cup Series competitors winning the Southern 500 is measured far beyond money It's the oldest of the stock car circuit's superspeedway events dating to 1950 and is revered by racing enthusiasts Allison who starts his Ford sixth in the 38-car field can collect a $1 million bonus if he takes the checkered flag at the 1366-mile track where the green flag is scheduled at 1 Please see Racepage 130 Attention fans: NFL kicks off its season 16-year-old Rubin beats first of 3 Maleeva sisters Inside The NFL "k' s'o i6 i' 4 FolAaoaffogalia- ''''s0uIt 1 0- la le 41 1 1 Aie 4 eN 01 114 4 I 7 iffrt-siii 1' igL' It ill fe 4 1 4 1 A a '1 1 i kl 1 i tuti -1 5 i''s a "Nt: st 4 Lomosnrmietiontwoosiampsa CHARLES CHANDLER Observer staff writer Charles Chandler will write a weekly column on the NFL The sofa just got a lot more comfortable Today at long last the NFL regular season begins It's time to bring out the chips pop the tops and plop in front of the TV Throw a party Start a tradition Continue old ones Can you last from the noon pregame shows to the final ESPN review near midnight?
