Ruth Undduer, 71. Mrs. Catherine V. Stone, 77. Teacher, volunteer Lillian Welling dies Matthews woman cared, took action By GERRY HOSTETLER Staff Writer Lillian Griffith Welling dismissed many a schoolroom class, but she never dismissed a student from her life.

She followed their progress and recognized each success with a personal letter. Mrs. Welling, who had taught for 33 years, the last 19 at Matthews Elementary School, died Thursday, Oct. 24, 1991, at home, 1929 Reverdy Ln. in Matthews.

She was 65. Children were not only important to her, but "they were her whole life," her husband, Alfred, said Saturday. Others in the community also were recipients of her caring nature. Dorothy Welling said her mother would "deliver Friendship Trays, bake cookies and take clients to doctor appointments. And she kept up with their families, too." Carol Simmons, a friend of 10 years, said Mrs.

Welling was a "quiet force in the church and community. While we were wondering what we could do, she had already done it." Mrs. Welling, a Mecklenburg County native and member of Providence Baptist Church, taught Sunday school for 40 years. When one of her former school students joined the church, she wrote a welcoming letter with a reminder of the church's importance. She was an Appalachian State Teachers College honors graduate.

Funeral is 2:30 p.m. today at Mrs. Welling Providence Baptist Church. Burial will be in Sharon Presbyterian Church cemetery. Hankins, Whittington Williams-Dearborn Funeral Home is in charge.

In addition to her husband, survivors are her sons, Alfred Welling Charles Welling; daughter, Ms. Dorothy Welling; brother, Paul Griffith of Newell; sisters, Mrs. Ruby Teague, Mrs. Isabel Oliver, both of Newell; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.
