How tough is it to win the lottery paint a masterpiece find hidden treasure? That's about how hard it has been thus far Al Geiberger did it on June 10 1977 in Memphis He was the first and last And of course that was before the million dollar prize was offered There have been six 60's in "PGA tournaments over the ages but when David Frost shot one of them two years ago there hadn't been one since 1957 But you sense that another breakthrough may be near Shimmering figures like 62's and 63's are a dime a dozen on the regular tour nowadays and there have been three 62's on the senior circuit already this year The first-round leader board at the PaineWebber Senior Invitational at Piper Glen Friday glistened with birdies and this is one of the stronger courses on the Tour The old guys are shooting the lights out Gary Player who has burned the grass off a few courses himself (he had two nine-hole scores of 29 and a 30 last year) said he thinks 59 will be shot again and it may not be some big-swinging 25-year-old on the regular tour who does it first "It wouldn't surprise me to see someone on the Seniors Tour 60 again before someone on the regular tour does it" said Player "The way guys are scoring out here now is amazing" Player once shot a 59 in the Brazilian Open "I followed that with a 70" he said "I looked at that 70 and said 'Geez that looks terrible' Arnold Palmer also thinks a 59 or better is just around the dogleg maybe on the seniors circuit but he said "I don't think it's going to become anything that happens with regularity I think what we're seeing now is what we're going to see" He's had some 61's and 62's and flirted with some 59's but '''''The King confesses "I got scared' (And in case we thought he himself couldn't still shoot some thing wonderful Arnie went out into the hot Friday afternoon and thrilled us with a 67 to stand one shot off the lead in the Paine Webber) Geiberger thinks his 59 will be hard to equal because of what happened to Palmer getting scared will happen to anyone else "They're (the players) almost too conscious of what the record is" he said "There's so much attention given to the possibility now and there's all that money There's a lot of pressure when you get way down under par" It's a long way from 62 to 59 said Geiberger Fellow pro Jim Colbert heard that and said "It's not even close It sounds like it is but it's not" When Geiberger shot his 59 he set it up with two early birdies then a streak of four birdies an eagle and two more birdies That left him 10 under with six holes to play He birdied three of the six Including the last the swi put and Shc Hol or and gra 59? ter) hid gallery as he walks up the fairway toward the 18th green in Friday's first round of the PaineWebber Invitational Hill's 66 leads charging Palmer by one ri The leaders cut in his competitive golf because of his poor play But after two good pro-am rounds and Friday's fun electrified by a 60-yard wedge shot for an eagle-three Palmer's game was alive again He led briefly late in the day until Hill strung together birdies on the three closing holes to overtake him group at three-under-par 69 that included Orville Moody Al Geiberger Bob Wynn and Bob Brue Playing in the group directly behind Palmer Hill was aware of what was happening He could see and hear the galleries cheering Palmer as he attacked the course he designed But Hill one of the steadiest players on the Senior Tour didn't let Palmer's lead last more than 10 minutes Hill the fourth-leading money winner on the tour this year finished off an eight-birdie afternoon with three in a row coming in He By RON GREEN Jr Raleigh
