this mess" About two hours after the race ended NASCAR vice president Les Richter announced Allison's victory would stand with Rudd finishing second after being penalized five seconds "In the rule book under race procedure it sets forth a couple things we learned from incidents a few years ago That includes exacting penalties in the waning moments of a race when we feel there is an infraction "After Rudd made contact with Allison from behind David Hoots the race director messaged Rudd's pits that he was to come in but he didn't Rudd's actions were felt to be unnecessary and avoidable" "It would have been more difficult (to judge) if Ricky would have been on the quarter-panel of (Allison's) car It wasn't He hit Davey in the rear end and spun Davey out He was running very hard into the 'corner racing hard to win But there comes a time when: you have to call balls and strikes to make a judgment call" Allison's win snaps a streak of eight straight road-course wins by Rudd or Rusty Wallace Wallace lost his chance in Sunday's race with an engine problem after leading 33 laps A reversal in such a situation isn't unprecedented In 1984 at Nashville Raceway NASCAR flagged Neil Bonnett the winner in a yellow-flag incident but two days later listed Darrell Waltrip as the victor But this time NASCAR stuck by its immediate ruling Rudd had left the track by the time NASCAR made its decision and Wilson wasn't available for comment "It's unfortunate this had to happen" Allison said "When I was running third behind Mark and Tommy I visnalized that trouble was going to break out between them and I said 'Hey I can win this Martin was deeply disappointed "We had him (Kendall)" he said "He got me in the right rear and turned me around We'd made the pass I was all but a couple of feet of clearing him I don't think he did it on purpose It was just racing It breaks my heart We needed that win more than he knows and we were on our way to getting it" The contact cut the left front tire on the car of Kendall driving in replace of injured Kyle Petty Although he took the lead briefly Kendall had to slow and eventually pit "I guess it's poetic justice" Kendall conceded "We got together a little bit I got loose and hit his left rear quarter-panel I le went around backward and the contact bent the fender in on my tire and that was really the end of both of our days The Associated Press contributed to this article By TOM HIGGINS Staff Writer SONOMA Calif Richard Petty apparently suffered only bruises in a hard crash Sunday during the late stages of the controversial Banquet Foods 300 at Sears Point International Raceway A spokesman at a Sonoma hospital where NASCAR's all-time victory leader was taken for examination said Petty 53 was to be released after treatment Sunday evening rays showed no fractures Petty's Pontiac slammed head-on into a Turn I tire wall on the 63rd of the Winston Cup events 74 laps when something appeared to fail on the right front of the car The car went straight instead of making the uphill turn The yellow flag resulting from the accident bunched the field for a restart that led to a wild finish with incidents involving leaders Mark Martin Tommy Kendall Davey Allison and Ricky Rudd Allison eventually was declared the winner after Rudd who finished in front of him was assessed a five-second penalty If Petty is able he's to head to Nashville to take part in tonight's Music City News Award presentations on TNN at 9 Petty will join singers Lorrie Morgan and Trisha Earwood to present the Star Of Tomorrow and Vocal Group Of The Year awards "INN is doing a lot for our sport and I'm honored to participate" Petty said of the network that is televising several Winston Cup and Grand National events this year for the first time "Some of the musicians on the show are people my wife Linda and I have admired for a long time and we look forward to meeting them in person" The country music stars undoubtedly feel the
