1 i 1 1 1 Ent CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Wednesday February 13 1991 11 1 ii---t It i "W-b A100d A fa Oooll 41 i 4 fF CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Wednesday February 13 1991 S'''uperb Performances Create A Stunning 'Silence' Valentine Sweetheart Special Treat your sweetheart to a memorable evening Flowers 5 Course Meal Romantic Setting Entertainment $2295 per person m- Reservations requeited in Like Hitchcock Demme dwells on innocent details with sinister connotations: a ball-point pen a dressmaker's dummy a doorbell More character development would have helped though more time spent with the serial killer would mean less time with Lecter And that's not a significant problem we're so quickly swept up in this demented world that we know immediately where we stand 1(to kir Af me i cell to one with a view of trees and water he'll supply facts But Lecter's prison supervisor Dr Chilton (Anthony Heald) has another idea He orders the psycho psychiatrist to spill the beans in a way that will make Chilton famous Lecter agrees supplying just enough information to gain an inch of freedom He turns that inch into a few hundred miles escaping after two horrifying killings and now Starling must contend with Iwo loose maniacs Jonathan Demme one of the best directors of quirky unsettling comedies and performance films Wild" "Stop Making would seem to be the wrong man for this picture Though his films have often had a dark side his other outright thriller is a dud: "The Last Embrace" his homage to Hitchcock down to an ending swiped from "North by Northwest" never rises above its implausible plot and self-consciously ominous direction "Lambs" however will remind you of Hitchcock at his best It's strewn with red herrings including a stunner when the FBI closes same name by Thomas Harris Both are loosely connected to his first book "Red Dragon" which became the movie "Manhunter" in 1986 Lecter appears in that one too played by Brian Cox Hopkins makes the part his own With his browless hollow eyes soft smudge of a mouth and a voice from the bottom of a grave he's an alien who feeds physically on people's faces and emotionally on their fears (We don't see much of the former luckily) Lecter is so terrifying that he makes the other villain serial killer Buffalo Bill who skins women less scary Ted Tally's screenplay suggests such a brute abused as a child could be defeated or even understood But Lecter?
