Smith WC Friday Junior High baseball coach By RICHARD WALKER Staff Writer DALLAS Mike Smith knew years ago that WC Friday Junior High School would have talented baseball teams But this year's Gaston County championship still was a surprise to Smith "I'd coached these boys in the Dixie boys baseball league in Dallas" for ID years said Smith who was hired as the Cavaliers' nonfaculty coach in February "I was confident they could do the job But it was a nice surprise" WC Friday heat county rival Belmont in the last game of the regular season to clinch the Division I title in this team" Strong pitching from eighth-grader John Ferguson (6-1 record) and ninth-graders Stiles (2-0) and Martin (2-0 with three saves) led the team The team also had balanced hitting Rodney Hulsey a ninth-grade catcher led the way with a 455 average Bryon Baker a ninth-grade center fielder hit 417 And eighth-grade first baseman Scott Quinn led the teams in RBIs "Last year these same boys were state runner-up at the state Dixie boys tournament in Sy Iva" Smith said "You could tell that winning then helped them out a lot this season" Then the Cavaliers beat previously unbeaten Holbrook 5-4 in this year's county championship It gave WC Friday its third county title in five years It has won or shared the division title the last five seasons The championship victory was typical of the Cavaliers' come-from-behind season WC Friday (11-2) trailed 4-1 after 412 innings But Cavaliers pinch-hitter Rashawn Wilson hit a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth Lance Martin's RBI single tied it at 1 in the sixth And Jason Doster's single with none out in the bottom of the seventh brought home Wesley Stiles with the winning run The kids battled hard all year" Smith said "There was
