THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Sunday June 2 1991 Griffin's demotion to Class A could be one-time star's last stop Lookouts hold off Knights college batting style he can turn things around Cubs officials hope so although none think of him as the sure thing anymore KNIGHTS NOTEBOOK By JOE POSNANSKI Staff Writer FORT MILL SC There seemed something final about the demotion of Ty Griffin from Class AA Charlotte to Class A Winston-Salem this week Its as if the Chicago Cubs having tried everything they know are throwing their hands up in surrender You know Griffin's story He was the sure thing: a star second baseman at Georgia Tech an All-American an Olympic hero in 1988 He was the Cubs' first-round pick ninth overall in the 1988 amateur draft He had baseball cards Scouts raved Kids hounded him for autographs So far it hasn't worked out Griffin was hitting 161 when he was demoted In three years with Charlotte he never hit higher than 231 How could something like this have happened to such a talent There is no shortage of theories Position change: At Georgia Tech Griffin was a second baseman The Cubs already have a pretty good second baseman future hall of lamer Ryne Sandberg so they tried Griffin at other positions He was a failure at third base and hasn't adjusted well to the outfield Change of batting style: The Cubs tried to get Griffin to use his hands more in college ne swung the bat mostly with his arms Griffin could never get used to the change He said he was thinking about SO many things at the plate he couldn't function" Knights manager Jay Loviglio said "He was in such a state of confusion he said he sometimes couldn't even see the ball You obviously can't hit that way" a Move from aluminum to wood bat: There's a growing feeling that Griffin was a great college hitter because he used an aluminum bat The ball doesn't bounce off a wooden bat the same way and some players simply can't make the adjustment It's also possible that though Griffin was a brilliant college player the Cubs may have overestimated his ability Griffin is not particularly big (6-0 187) or fast and hasn't hit a home run this year Still Griffin feels that with a fresh start in Winston-Salem he will return to second base and his MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE SOUTHERN LEAGUE First Half Eastern Division Pct GB Saturday's Results xGreenville (Braves) 34 14 708 Chattanooga 5 Charlotte with nine compares himself to teammate Kevin Roberson who has eight homers "I can't hit the water tower like Robey" Welch says "He can hit them a long way I just want to hit line drives I'm definitely not a bash brother" Welch leads the team with a 3:31 average and 35 RBIs Bits and pieces Charlotte pitcher John Gardner (3-2 19:3 ERA) has been the Knights' most effective starter But Loviglio might move Gardner to the bullpen "I think that might be his role in the big leagues" Loviglio said Meanwhile it looks like Tim Watkins who was so good as the Knights closer has been moved to the rotation for good "He wanted the chance to pitch more" Loviglin said The Knights are second in the league with 3:3 homers All but seven of those have come from Welch Elvin Pau lino (nine) and Roberson home with over Sumter Rangers scoo quick victory By JOHN GLENNON Staff Writer GASTONIA It was as if Gastonia and Sumter tired of scoring tons of runs agreed on this: Tonight let's get out of here quick And the two teams did just that In the third game of a series that had seen 16 and 17 runs scored the first two nights Gastonia sprinted to a two-hour 3-2 victory over the Flyers Saturday night The Rangers (20-29) won for the third time in four South Atlantic League games largely because Gastonia pitcher Tyrone Washington has become almost unbeatable He pitched seven scoreless innings against Sumter extending his shutout streak to 26 innings over four outings He allowed four hits striking out two and walking two Washington a 6-6 190-pounder from Chicago was in trouble only once when Sumter's Rondell White singled stole second and moved to third on Todd Samples' single in the sixth But Washington got Parkwood High graduate Marc Tsitouris to ground into an inning-ending double play "I think my lastball has been getting a lot better" Washington said The pitching coach (Jackson Todd) has been working a lot with me I'm just starting to get into my groove now" Though Washington's streak continued another Rangers' streak By LEONARD LAVE Sports Editor FT MILL SC Too few hits too few runs another loss It's been a far too familiar story recently for the Charlotte Knights and it didn't change Saturday night The Knights (24-28) closed out a six-game homestand falling behind early and not having near enough to recover in a 5-3 Class AA Southern League baseball loss to Chattanooga The stay at Knights Castle wasn't a disaster Charlotte won three of the six But more disturbing was the pattern of limited production that has followed the Knights through their last eight In that stretch they've scond 15 runs and five of those came in one game "We've got to score some runs and make it easier on the pitchers" said Charlotte manager Jay Loviglio "You know how hitting goes You might get a couple and there it goes We need to get a couple of guys hitting well at the same time" The Knights will try to get something started today on the road in a 7 pm game at Knoxville They got on the board first Saturday but couldn't make it stick After two scoreless innings the Knights got the game's first run in the bottom of the third Kevin Roberson had the RBI driving in Billy White with a single to right But the Lookouts limited to two hits in the first three innings by starting Charlotte pitcher John Salles struck hard as the game wore on By the time they were finished they had 13 hits 10 off Salles before he was relieved in the seventh Chattanooga tied the game in the fourth on Todd Trafton's solo home run then pushed ahead 2-1 one inning later The real damage to Charlotte's chances didn't come until the seventh The Lookouts loaded the bases with one out Jeff Branson then drove a single hard down the first base line driving in two runs A few moments later after Henry Gomez went to the mound in relief of Salles Reggie Sanders had a sacrifice fly to drive in another run The 5-1 deficit was too much for the Knights and their inconsistent bats Saturday's crowd of 7078 was the second biggest of the season at Knights Castle Attendance one night earlier was 7169 CHATTANOOGA CHARLOTTE abrhbi abrhbi Pose It 5 1 10 Ramseycl 3120 Branson ss 5 0 1 2 White2b 3
