Faggart of Concord started up front and led most of the way to win the Goody's Sportsman 150 run after Winston Cup qualifying Faggart ran alone for a brief stretch about midway through the 100-lap 150-mile event but had to scramble to stay ahead at the finish for a two-car-length margin of victory Marty Ward of Marietta SC closed up and chased Faggart into the final 10 laps and momentarily took the lead But Faggart reclaimed it and went on to the victory Faggart's average speed for his $3500 victory was 124971 mph Ritchie Petty son of former Richard Petty engine builder Maurice Petty and nephew of Richard took a hard hit in an accident on Lap 13 He complained of soreness in his neck and shoulder and was taken to Cabarrus Memorial Hospital for what speedway officials called "precautionary rays" By LEONARD LAVE and TOM HIGGINS Stan Writer Few drivers will be as busy this weekend as Kenny Wallace who's scheduled for double duty in Charlotte Motor Speedway's major events Saturday and Sunday But it's qualifying not the Champion 300 Grand National race or the Coca Cola 600 for Winston Cup cars that had Wallace nervous Wednesday "That's the way it always is with me I just get nervous about getting the car qualified" he said His relief role replacing injured Kyle Petty in the Sabco Racing Pontiac made Wednesday a more hectic day than Wallace figures to face today when he tries to make the 300 field He put the Pontiac into the 19th position for the 600 with a qualifying speed of 171494 mph Winston Cup regular Rick Mast and Australian driver Allan Grice crashed in morning practice leading to 600 time trials Grice had a bizarre explanation for the wreck that eliminated his Bob RahillyButch Mock-prepared Olds from the race: "The steering DraEles wheel came loose in Turn 3" said Grice who was released from the infield infirmary after treatment for bruises "It's the driver's responsibility to put the wheel on securely so obviously I didn't" Grice had hoped to make his third start at Charlotte Tommy Ellis' loss since he came to Charlotte as a substitute driver for injured Geoff Bodine amounts to more than the $18000 fine imposed by NASCAR for an engine infraction Sunday in The Winston Ellis' street car was broken into at a hotel Monday night Taken were treasured stopwatches he has owned since he began racing 21 years ago four uniforms golf and October For all his other success however the speedway hasn't been as kind to Earnhardt over the past four seasons and his Coca-Cola 600 week preparation got off to a shaky start Wednesday After completing one lap and making the field at 14th with a speed of 172188 Earnhardt tried to force a little quicker lap out of his Chevrolet The result was a spin in the first turn and a collision with the wall in the second turn abruptly ending his qualifying run The damage appeared to be only cosmetic and Earnhardt was able to laugh about the incident knowing the car would still be race-ready "Charlotte's been a little rough on us lately particularly that corner" he said His finishes since the 1986 sweep: 20th 12th 13th 17th 38th 42nd 30th and 25th "It's just the way it goes here" he said
