lockers that were gutted by fire By KATHLEEN MCLAIN Staff Writer Evangelist Morris Cerullo owner of the New Heritage USA theme park near Fort Mill SC is launching an eight-month series of preaching appearances with a crusade in the Philippines this week The six-day "New Anointing Explosion" at Manila's Ultra Stadium precedes Cerullo's European television debut On Monday he will begin broadcasting the "Victory with Morris Cerullo" program every weekday morning on Europe's Superchannel which has an estimated audience of 80 million viewers via cable and direct-dish receivers Cerullo who still operates out of his San Diego ministry headquarters paid about $50 million for Jim Bakker's former PM empire and satellite television network He has announced plans to spend another $15 million to prepare the Christian retreat center for a grand reopening this summer The schedule released to The Observer on Wednesday shows that Cerullo will be on the road while much of the New Heritage renovation takes place He will return to the United States next Thursday for a weekend "Miracle Explosion" in San Francisco's 3700-seat Circle Star Center During the month of April he has Mexico City Sept 23-Oct Cerullo says he's expecting more than 100000 people at the Manila crusade this week and 1 million people in Bombay in May During 1989 the last year for which complete ministry figures are available Cerullo led crusades and conferences in 24 cities Garinger Fire Sends By VALCA VALENTINE Staff Wrtter Dense black smoke whirling from a Wednesday morning fire set in a locker triggered an early dismissal of Garinger High School students from afternoon classes Students return to classes today on the Garinger campus where no injuries or structural damage was reported following the 10:40 am incident said Principal Richard Cans ler Charlotte fire officials label the Students an isolated one in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools "It's a recurring occurrence" he said "We've worked several fires involving lockers There have been various arrests made at various Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools" A student saw flames flickering from the locker reported it to a teacher who in turn switched an alarm and students evacuated the school Jonas said Firefighters arrived two minutes after the call A school security morning blaze "incendiary" meaning the fire was intentionally set said fire inspector Timothy Jonas The fire began in locker 321 a 5-by-2-foot blue unassigned locker identical to about 200 others in a classroom foyer adjacent to three classrooms in Building 100 Smoke from the fire filtered into two other connecting classroom buildings "We have no suspects" Cans ler said Jonas said the locker fire is not Early officer had extinguished the flames which at one time licked the I2-foot ceiling But the thick smoke in the three buildings housing about 22 classrooms each prompted school officials to send students home "We couldn't keep the school open and close these classroom buildings" Cans ler said "Additional space for the students was not available We allowed those with their own cars to drive home others we sent home by bus" Care Case and the legislature last year do not have to be used for building prisons but they cannot be used for operating expenses a deputy attorney general said Wednesday Skip Capone told the appropriations subcommittee on justice and public safety that $200 million in prison bonds approved by voters in November and $75 million in bonds issued by the General Assembly can be used to renovate prisons and to buy prison equipment rather than build prisons "There were just some questions about whether the bond money had to be used only for new construction or whether it could be used for renovation projects and repairs" said Rep Anne Barnes D-Orange "But it can't be used for operating expenses" Subcommittee members held a-Jare closed session with Capone for nearly an hour to discuss lawsuits
