Wednesday that Sheriff Hugh Culbreath threw a poll watcher for Rep George Smathers out of a Tampa precinct during last primary voting The charges were made by Ed Blackburn Jr widely-known operator of a Tampa super market wrho appeared before the grand jury for 30 minutes Blackburn said he told the jury that Cnlbreath threw him across the concrete of Precinct 11 while he was acting as poll watcher for Smathers Culbreath violated two sections of the Florida election law Blackburn said which prohibits an officer in a polling place unless asked by precinct officials and also prohibits Interference of state central purchasing will be set up by the 1951 Florida legislature Addressing a class of public administration students at Florida State University Warren said he thought there was less doubt about that than about any other possible legislalion His central purchasing program was not enacted by the 1949 legislature He set up a partial central purchasing plan for agencies under his authority but It petered out some months ago Asked by a student: "How do feel about the sales tax Warren sale It isn't adequate for the needs of the state' He told another questioning student he given the three-judge federal court The hearing will be in Jacksonville May 29 The same three judges who last fall denied Injunctions brought in two separate suits by a group of growers and shippers and a band of canners will hear new motions on the cases Curtis Waller of the New Orleans Circuit Court of Appeals Is the presiding jurist Other federal judges are Dozier A Devane of Tallahassee and William Barker of Tampa The suit brought by the growers sought to have the law thrown out on the grounds It was discriminatory because of more rigid early season maturity requirements Attorneys for the shippers and growers now seek to have the suit dismissed Prison Terms Meted Youths 0 For Holdup Herald Service FORT PIERCE Attempted holdup of the Moose club-room here the night of Feb 4 brought a four-year penitentiary sentence Wednesday for one youth and three years for another Bob Rabe 21 drew the four year sentence from Judge A Kanner and Martin Johns his alleged accomplice thtee Babe was convicted by a jury recently after he had endeavored to serve as his own attorney and Johns had pleaded guilty to the armed robberty attempt charge Both of the youths said they came here from Miami According to the story Rabe entered the clubroom while Johns waited outside In a stolen jeep Rabe fled however when he met with resistance and barely outran a pursuer Other sentences were imposed by Judge Kanner as follows: James Mitchell 30 days for petit larceny Edward Smith 18 months for larceny of automobile John Gillon 10 months for breaking and entering James An derson three years for breaking and entering Leroy DeLoachone year and Warren Carver 10 months for breaking and entering Richard Payette one year for embezzlement Charles Mitchell one year for breaking and entering Two Negro murder cases are scheduled for trial later in the month been receiving letters urging him to be a candidate for governor in 1952 What Peterson would like is a part time position on some state board that has to do with conservation Much of his 18 years In Congress has been spent on conservation He has been chairman of a committee on fisheries and now heads the public lands committee whose assignments include the marking of historical sites is a rich field of natural geographical he told a reporter it has hundreds of historic sites that could be marked Florida was visited at times by highway 1 last month continued to show an Increase over 1949 figures the East Coast Highways Association says Howard A Smith executive secretary of the highway promotion group said the results of State Road Department surveys showed the traffic also was greater in March than in January and February of this year The report Smith said showed an average of 4262 automobiles traveled the highway
