Carolina Board of Governors committee decided to leave the writing of coaches' contracts to individual campuses The committee formed last year after some board members expressed concern that former NC State basketball coach Jim Valvano's contract obligated the school to pay far too much money if Valvano were dismissed without cause Some board members questioned the wisdom of schools promising to buy out a coach's contract if the university decides to fire the coach Committee members considered establishing guidelines for campuses that would regulate such contracts But they decided Thursday to leave the business to chancellors and trustees the people who have traditionally been in charge of athletics They did agree however to draft a report outlining concerns they have including rollover couple of years she will be doing the same thing I did today" Capriati who turned pro three months ago at age 13 said she wanted to put on a better show "I'm disappointed because I thought I could have made it closer" said the eighth-grader from Wesley Chapel Fla "People expected a longer match But I'm happy I could get to the semifinals That was still great for me" In today's men's semifinals Capriati had not lost a set in four matches and seemed to have the grooved powerful strokes and the fearless carefree attitude to beat almost anybody But in Seles she ran up against the hottest player in tennis winner of live consecutive tournaments and the hardest hitter on the women's tour Seles proved to have too much firepower blasting two-handed forehands and backhands around the court like bullets from a machine gun "She had me pinned to the baseline moving left and right" Capriati said "She keeps you deep Whenever she has it she goes for it" But Capriati also was kicking herself for her tactics "I was making so many errors" she said "I wasn't moving the balls or keeping them deep I should have come to net more and attacked" Capriati also had trouble with her serve double-faulting four times and holding serve once in eight games In all Se les won 63 points to 39 for Capriati Se les moved to a 5-2 'cad in the second set before things got interesting Serving out to a 40-15 lead Se les double-faulted on the first and netted a short backhand on the second Two points later she squandered a third match point Two more times Se les was at match point but Capriati would not surrender Two points later Capriati sailed a forehand long Se les did a little hop and then threw an arm around Capriati's shoulder at the net "I was lucky to pull it out because she had quite a few unbelievable shots there" Se les said "She was still fighting like it was 5-5 in the last set" NASCAR TODAY Event: Banquet 300 Race No 12 (of 29) for NASCAR Winston Cup Series Sunday 3 pm Wham Sears
