every time he starts for the Charlotte Knights The improvement continued Monday night at Knights Castle when Bullinger and the Knights beat Greenville 2-1 in a Class AA Southern League baseball game Afterward Knights pitching coach Rick Kranitz said simply "That's as fine a game as I've seen pitched this year either for us or against us" Bullinger 2-1 since being called up from Class A Winston-Salem had some help After allowing two hits in seven innings he ran into minor trouble in the eighth Dave Rosario finished up earning his third save The final line on Bullinger offered 723 innings pitched two hits one run one walk and 10 strikeouts The performance dropped his ERA to 214 The difference between this start and his first two according to Kranitz was that But linger wasn't afraid to mix his curve with his sinking fastball and slider "He was able to get his curve ball over and that's a major-league curve ball" Kranitz said But linger a shortstop who hit 216 last year with the Knights is proving to be more effective throwing pitches than swinging at them "He's learning fast" said coach Jay Loviglio Braves starter Judd Johnson took a no-hitter and a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the sixth but there it fell apart Charlotte's Rusty Crockett opened with a walk and with two outs Damn Duffy singled hard to left to break up the no-hitter Then Johnson appeared to be out of the jam when Ty Griffin lifted a foul fly down the right-field line and Greenville's Kevin Batiste chugged after it But the hustling Batiste overran the ball slightly and had to reach back for it dropping it Griffin then squirted a ground single into left to tie the game The winner scored when Braves' third baseman Tom Redington who hit his 10th homer in the first booted Chico Walker's grounder Notes: Charlotte manager Tommy Helms missed the game to be with brother Larry who had a heart attack Sunday and is being treated at Gaston Memorial Hospital Loviglio managed Monday The crowd of 3281 pushed Charlotte's attendance past last season's total of 157720 The Knights have drawn a league-leading 158813 There's a two-day break for the Southern League All-Star Game Knights on the
