Write' GASTONIA Gastonia Rangers pitcher Steve Rowley admits he's in a tough spot With pitcher Bobby Reed chasing the South Atlantic League record for consecutive shutout innings Rowley feels the heat the next day when he follows him in the rotation "I always have to follow Bobby" Rowley said after the Rangers' 4-1 baseball win over Columbia Sunday at Sims Legion Park "People expect me to go out and do the same" But he seems to be handling it just fine Rowley (2-1) threw seven innings Sunday allowing four hits and one earned run Eric Bickhardt pitched the final two scoreless innings for his fourth save Rowley was well aware of the stiff wind blowing in from right field "I had to keep throwing strikes and keep them off balance" said Rowley "With the wind blowing in I just threw strikes I didn't think they would hit it out of here" The Rangers (17-7) scored all their runs in the fourth inning off Mets starter Chris Dorn (5-7) With one out left-handed hitting Randy Marshall sliced a line drive that Columbia left fielder Mark Thomas battled in the sun and wind only to have the ball bounce off his glove for a double Craig Newkirk followed with a solid single to left and Marshall stopped at third Joey Ward low worked the countfull before coaxing a walk Jose Oliva who entered the game with a 198 batting average lined a single to score two runs They were the 36th and 37th RBIs for Oliva third best on the team "Every time I bat with men on base I concentrate" Oliva said "I have more concentration then" On his hit Oliva took second and Ward low moved to third when the Mets missed a cut-off man and the throw went through to home plate With the infield moved in Buddy Micheu smacked a single past third to make it 4-0 Columbia (12-14) scored its only run in the fifth Rowley who had retired eight straight entering the inning disposed of the first two hitters before Kevin Carroll reached on an infield single After Tito Navarro walked Tim Howard singled to center to score Carroll Note: The Rangers and Mets continue their series tonight at 7 Tug McGraw former relief pitcher for the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies is Gastonia's starting pitcher It will be the second appearance for McGraw in Sims Legion Park Last August McGraw asked to participate by Rangers President Roman Gabriel allowed three hits and one run in five innings against Sumter McGraw has
