June 11 1990 311-- SECTIO Bait "-ontinues Dominance Rudd For Victory On Road Course Grand National Notebook By BRAD JOHNSON Staff Writer Everything good must come to an end It's an old saying but usually is true Chuck Bown is taking exception to the saying and continuing his dominance on the Busch Grand National short tracks Bown's win Saturday night in Rougemont marked his fourth straight short-track win and put some more distance between himself and the rest of the drivers in the race for the points championship "As far as the points go things are really looking good" Bown said "We'll work hard not to give any points back and we're coming up on some tracks we really should run strong at" He won the Rose's 200 with a final-lap sprint to the finish after a caution flag In the final lap Bown 36 steered his Pontiac ahead of challengers Dave Rezendes and Jack Ingram to win by two car-lengths Bobby Hamilton finished fourth in an Oldsmobile and Jeff Burton was fifth In Bown's search for his first championship he has won three poles four races had six top-five and 10 top-10 finishes in 14 races this season "I can't say enough about the the guys preparing the Nescafe Pontiac" Bown said "They sure are making Chuck Bown look good" Points Lead No Surprise Bown who has 112 more points than Rob Moroso scored at this juncture of the season when he won the championship in 1989 leads with 2073 Bobby Labonte younger brother of Winston Cup driver Terry Labonte holds on to second with 1993 The remainder of the top five Jimmy Hensley (1973) Tom Peck (1777) and Tommy Houston (1769) after 14 of 31 events Driver Change Car owner John Pharo who has had several drivers in his Oldsmobiles since joining the series last year has fired driver Frank Fleming and replaced him with two drivers Winston Cup regular Dick Trickle will drive Pharo's car selected races as he did in June 2 race at Dover Del while Ed Berrier of Winston-Salem will drive the car in all the others Berrier who has been racing the series since 1984 has not had steady ride since the end of 1988 season Coming Up The series will take a week's hiatus before returding to action June 23 in Barberville Ha for the From Page 1B ahead of me and it looked like I might be out of it" said Wallace who moved into third place 112 points behind Martin "Now Dale is behind me "You just never know what to expect in this sport" Wallace was expected to run well at Sears Point although he'd qualified a disappointing Ilth But he had won four of the past six NASCAR road races and finished second in the other two He met expectations moving up quickly to take the lead on Lap 23 and into contention the rest of the way Now Wallace has won five of the most recent seven road races in a Grand Prix nicknamed "Glenda" in honor of the internationally famous race course at Watkins Glen NY "I don't know how long this streak can go on" said Wallace 33 who lives in Concord "And I don't know how 1 became such a successful road racer watched Ricky Rudd 'cause he's so smooth and good taking every corner perfect Compared to him it looks like I'm driving out across the desert and flipping the car" Wallace credited crew chief Barry Dodson and his teammates for setting up the car changing rear Springs mainly that improved it over qualifying Friday Martin had to overcome tough problems to finish second in the race and take over first in the point standings "Early in the race all the leaders stayed on the track during a caution rather than getting new tires" Martin said "Ricky Dale (Earnhardt) and me all had flats in the same corner at the same time and ran into each other The crash knocked my car's front end out of line That doesn't hurt as much on a road course (as it would an oval track) so I was lucky It did make the car a little more squirrelly trying to brake "Also we had a sticking throttle But we got that worked out and by the end of the race we had a strong car" Martin finished third in the championship chase last year behind Wallace and Earnhardt Shepherd and his Bud Moore team appeared in strong position to maintain the top spot toward the title then trouble developed without warning "I drove pretty conservative and was just taking care of things" said Shepherd "1 reckon we broke a valve We never overturned (revved) the engine or anything like that Something just went wrong We had a good run going If I could just have lasted 'tit the last lap I probably could have coasted back and saved a lot of points But that's racin'" Rudd led the second most laps 13 and appeared to have the combination to go two-for-two at Sears Point But cut tires doomed the heavy pre-race favorite's chances 1 Associated Press MONTREAL Ayrton Senna of Brazil benefiting from teammate Gerhard Berger's miscue at the start cruised to an easy victory over countryman Nelson Piquet in Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix Senna's McLaren-Honda averaged 111946 mph for 70 laps of the 273-mile circuit finishing 10497 seconds ahead of Piquet's Benneton-Ford for his third victory in five races this season He built his lead in the driver point standings to 31-19 over Berger whose chance at victory was wiped out by a one-minute penalty for jumping the green light at the start Berger's penalty was assessed on the scoring sheet and his car was allowed to continue running His car was actually the first to take the checkered flag Berger jumped to fourth with the fastest lap of the race 120344 mph on the 70th lap Senna 30 winner of the 1988 Formula One title and runner-up to Alain Prost of France last season led 67 laps in securing the 23rd career victory He relinquished the lead only when he darted into the pits in the early going to exchange his grooved Other Races John Heinricy drove a Chevrolet Camaro
