the Gators increased their margin to eight strokes over Arizona with one day to play With Chris Toulson (two-over-par 74) and Chris DiMarco (71) finished Dudley Hart and Jeff Barlow through 16 holes home-court advantage in the series now belongs to Portland The Blazers are 9-0 at home in this season's playoffs and have three straight games there at Memorial Coliseum The Pistons haven't won there since Oct 19 1974 when they beat the Trail Blazers 122-99 "We've got to try and win at least one to get it back (in Auburn Hills)" Daly said "otherwise they can end it in their building "We'll just have to wait and see what happens" Late Thursday HORSE RACING: Mistake Costly To Track A mistake turned a mediocre horse race into a historic event Friday at Philadelphia Park in Bensalem Pa and cost the track at least $30000 Track officials posted the wrong winner after a photo finish in the sixth race and by the time they corrected the error some customers had cashed winning tickets on a horse that actually didn't win Other customers had thrown away losing tickets that turned out to be winners Edited by Thomas Torrence By LEONARD LAYE Sports Editor PORTLAND Ore The names are the same and the uniform jerseys are still labeled Detroit Pistons But through the opening two games of the NBA Finals the Pistons have puzzled themselves their coaches and their fans with a noticeable lack of passion and a sluggish brand of basketball And Friday as the Pistons and Portland Trail Blazers made their way West to prepare for Sunday's Game 3 Detroit coach Chuck Daly was worried Apparently with good reason The Pistons' quest for a repeat title is hardly done with the bestof-seven series tied at 1-1 And it was after all only two days ago that the Blazers experienced the roller-coaster playoff mood swings after losing Game 1 But in winning the Tuesday opener 105-99 and barely losing a dramatic 106-105 overtime game Thursday the Pistons looked tired error-prone disorganized and unemotional A list of Pistons problems was long enough to keep Daly reading for the duration of his cross-country flight if he had the stomach: The home-court advantage wasn't really much of one Despite opening the finals with two games at The Palace in Auburn Hills Mich the Pistons struggled They didn't lead in Game 1 until Isiah Thomas came to life for seven minutes of sive brilliance at the finish In Game 2 they showed flashes of their old selves in the first period then dropped back into more than two quarters of relative futility before taking the Blazers to overtime Star defender Dennis Rodman is still hobbling with a sprained left ankle reducing his quickness and limiting his leaping ability thereby rendering him much less effective on defense and on the boards And he aggravated the injury again Thursday night Guard Joe Dumars has not demonstrated the aggressive creative offensive game that made him the most valuable player in last season's Detroit championship sweep of the Los Angeles Portland which immediately and somewhat surprisingly dumped any emotional baggage it might have been carrying after the late collapse in Game 1 is the consistent team Through nine periods the Blazers have led at the end of six WORLD CUP SOCCER GROUP A GROUP Notebook GROUP MP Fa FT Tab-ORD A FPI 38 3-11 0-0 3-0 0 6 6 48 3-9 6-8 124 1 2 12 28 6-10 2-3 8-1 6 6 14 43 13-20 6-6 3-0 3 333 42 3-11 15-15 '72 West was named second-team All-World both times He has a 10-carat gold ring for each championship one red one blue and one green He has never worn one because he fears his job duties as a Clover SC Pharr Yarns plant engineer would flaw a ring "They look a lot like university rings" West said "I'll probably pass them down to my grandchildren" West played for the Reds until 1986 when the team disbanded He has played 29 seasons in the Pharr Yarns plant leagues and for the past 11 years he has also played on over-40 teams In 1979 West played on the Howard's Furniture over-40 team that reached the national finals in Columbia West does not jog nor does he lift weights to stay in shape He smokes two packs of cigarettes per day and he has gained 30 pounds since he weighed 185 in 1961 But it is West's speed that sets him apart He is faster than most if not all players on his plant league team "He can run with a 20-yearold" said Flip Dow who coaches West's Gaston County 40-andover team "When he hits the ball everyone in front of him goes And if they're slow they're in trouble" Over the years West's first teammates have stopped playing softball Reds pitcher Jody Brock man is now a shipping clerk at Pharr Yarn's Space Dye Plant Shortstop Mike Hoover works for an investment firm in Rock Hill Outfielder Gene West Dean's younger brother is a Pharr Yarns supply manager Dean West believes he is the only team member from those championship years still playing He admits he doesn't get excited about every game "A lot of times now" he says "I'll be working in my garden and it will get overcast I'll say 'I wouldn't mind a bit if it rained'" Ile says his love for the game remains though as do the same rituals he has performed for almost three decades On game days his wife Kay lays his uniform on the bed and he puts it on after work He eats nothing before going to the park Ile stretches before every game Then he runs the sidelines until he pants In 1988 West tied for first place in an open home-run hitting contest at Pharr Park In 1989 Roger Ward an opposing center fielder laughed at West when he came to bat for the first time West stepped out of the batter's box fuming He crushed the next pitch over Pharr Park's center-field fence He rounded second base and laughed back at Ward Three weeks ago in a plant league game he charged from first to third base on a single to shallow right field as a stunned shortstop bobbled a relay throw Seconds later he sprinted home ahead of an outfielder's toss "I'm 51 now" West says "and I really think I'm better than when I was 25" Ills wife Kay says when she married Dean in 1963 she thought he would outgrow softball "But" she says "I'm finding out that men don't outgrow their hobbies sometimes" 1 1 am Rudd Edges Irvan To Win Pole On Road Course Continued From Preceding Page Instead of getting a warm-up lap like we do on oval tracks you come right out of the pits here and go on the clock It's mentally tough to do after sitting around for a couple hours "In the Winter Olympics when you watch those guys ski through those gates if they miss one it throws them off for the next three or four Same with us and the turns here To attack it like you have to do in qualifying you take a chance at missing one of those gates "I clipped every one of them like I wanted to and I'm happy to be excited about" Irvan narrowly nipped Dale Earnhardt who whipped to third place in a Chevy at 90496 mph one of his best road-course runs ever "1 don't know where that lap came from" Earnhardt said Ford drivers Bill Elliott and Mark Martin took the next two spots at 90138 and 90134 respectively Qualifying sixth through 10th were California road racer Tom Kendall Chevy Ken Schrader Chevy Winston Cup point standings leader Morgan Shepherd Ford Terry Labonte Olds and Dale Jarrett Ford say I didn't miss any" Native Californian Ernie Irvan who now races out of Concord delighted home-state followers by taking the other spot on the front row with a clocking of 90644 Irvan raced regularly and won at short tracks within 100 miles of San Francisco before coming to North Carolina to seek his NASCAR fortune eight years ago "Fans are showing up from all over Stockton Modesto" said Irvan "We've got four motor homes filled with kinfolks parked over here and they're excited If I can run the race as smooth as we've practiced we have a chance of really giving them something to Pontiac-driving Winston Cup champion Wallace who finished right on Rudd's bumper in a 300 thriller last June was Ilth fastest at 89440 mph The top 25 spots in the 40-car field were determined Friday Among those failing to make it were Richard Petty Harry Gant Dick Trickle and Geoff Bodine Bodine had a problem leaving the pits in a Ford many expected to threaten for a top-live starting position and managed a lap of 82959 mph The final 15 spots are to be decided today at I pm prior to a 200-kilometer race for NASCAR's Southwest Tour cars.
