14C THE CHARLOTTE OBSERVER Sunday March 18 1990 Furman Legend Alley Dies At 81 Carolinas Because So Much Is Riding On Your Tires? Otearvar Stiff and Niws StrvIcM Ex-Furman athletic director and basketball coach Lyles Alley who was known as for his coaching style died Friday at Greenville (SC) Memorial Hospital He was 81 Alley a Spartanburg native and a 1933 graduate of Furman was admitted to Greenville Memorial Hospital Wednesday afternoon after suffering a heart attack athletic director Ray Parlier said Alley coached Furman's basketball team from 1946 to '49 and from 1951 to '66 with a record of 249-257 overall and 117-137 in the Southern Conference He also served as athletic director from 1959 until his retirement in 1975 was a like a father to many players coaches and said Parlier what I would call the ideal ambassador for Furman The second round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate golf tournament was postponed by rain at the Santee (SC) Country Club The second round will be played this morning followed by the third Davidson beat visiting Yale 9-8 in baseball with four runs in the seventh and last inning tournament UNCC won the opener behind pitcher Courtney Hankes (5-1) getting two runs in the seventh on an RBI triple by Karen Becker and an infield grounder by Beth Bog-gess Becker hit a leadoff homer in the first inning of each game High Schools Sophomore Carrie Lagana scored three goals and Robin Kris-sel and Lisa Brooks each added one as host East Mecklenburg opened Friday with a 5-1 girls soccer victory over North Mecklenburg Baseball The Charlotte Twilight Baseball League will have an organizational meeting Tuesday at 1 1:30 am at the Barclay Cafeteria in Amity Gardens Shopping Center Four to six teams are planned to play two weeknights each week beginning in mid-June The age limit is 19 and over and all teams will draw from Charlotte only For more information call
