showers washed out qualifying Friday for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series race More of the same weather is forecast today at Atlanta International Raceway meaning likely the lineup for 328-lap race on the 1522-mile track will be determined by point standings If that happens put Earnhardt on the pole in a Chevrolet with Wallace in a Pontiac alongside him for the 1 pm green flag (ABC WSOC-TV channel 9) Partly-cloudy conditions are forecast for race day Speedway officials announced a revised schedule calling for practice from 8 am to 10 am today with one round of qualifying for the 40 positions in the 500 starting at 11 The Automobile Racing Club of 500K would go off at 1 pm as scheduled However with the prospect of further rainfall put at 100 NASCAR officials privately were preparing a starting order based on the car-owner standings A speedway spokesman was non-committal on what will happen with the ARCA race should showers interfere with its running After the first three Winston Cup races Earnhardt has 474 points to lead Wallace by eight A battle from the beginning Sunday between Earnhardt a three-time Winston Cup champion and defending champion Wallace would command attention under any circumstances They are currently the hardest-driving most dynamic personalities and are colorful fun-loving buddies as well The relationship recently was strained after a sheet-metal incident in the Pontiac 400 at Richmond as the two dueled for second place Wallace was angry but tempered his remarks When Earnhardt attempted to approach Wallace about the tangle a week later he initially was rebuffed got the first-time champion Earnhardt said The two talked a bit afterward however sat down and had a little Wallace said this week let it be known that going to race each other hard But we also agreed be friends The part is so intriguing about Earnhardt and Wallace starting in such proximity on a track where each has done well recently Earnhardt has won two of the Atlanta last three 500-milers Wallace took the Journal 500 of 1988 and led most of the first 2 1 7 laps of last Motorcraft 500 before a burned piston put him out If the point standings are used to set the starting order positions three to 10 will be Morgan Shepherd Ricky Rudd Kyle Petty Jimmy Spencer Bill Elliott Darrell Waltrip Sterling Marlin and Dick Trickle Buddy Baker bidding to begin a comeback from an injury suffered in 1988 would line up 22nd for his first start in 44 races get that position based on car owner Junie points However the debut of the new team owned by actor Paul Newman and Rick Hendrick probably would have to be put off The outfit fielding a car for driver Greg Sacks has no points A NASCAR committee on Friday rejected the Jack Roush Racing appeal of the penalties it received following driver Mark victory in the Pontiac 400 The team based near Greensboro was fined $40000 and docked 46 Winston Cup points for having an illegally large carburetor spacer plate on the winning Ford It was allowed to retain credit for the triumph Committee members John Cooper Dan Greenwood and Bob Smith at the Atlanta track and be reached Concorde WEST HENDERSON 73-Moore
