THE DAILY lflDElEMDEMT: SANTA BARBARA, CAL, JANUARY 2G, 181)5. W. O. SHOW, GROCER. 811-813 State Street.

Quite an improvement (say travesty) was inaugurated recently during divine service at Terry, Okla. Mrs. Deacon and Mrs. Minister were the improvers. The ladies quarreled uo doubt over the merits or demerits of their worser halfs they got beligerent, they got boisterous, and as all things are catching the whole congregation joined in with hand and heart and succeeded to change divine service into a roaring Lan-nigans bawl.

association finds it incumbent to mention that all printing establishments outside of the dailies can do the work if not better at least cheaper because the more business the less the expense. The association based upon pliilan-trophy solely is ready and willing to print everything written and telephoned to the office of the dailies as usual gratis, deeming it an honor to do so because the welfare of the city of Santa Barbara demands it. Notwithstanding the Independent office being headquarters of the Santa Barbara Daily Demise Association we graciously permit our esteemed contemporary to publish the future elaborate proceeding of our new enterprise, placing the names of the many members in expectancy in golden letters at the head oFthe preambulations, if for no other reasons than to convince an admiring public that the Morning Press is ever on the alert to oblige with free adveitising, whereas the Independent does so less violently. tbilir WILLIAM LA YIES, Editor and Proprietor. OFFICIAL CITY PAPER. 'Sheets InScotland.

The custom of sleeping in one large sheet, doubled at the foot, seems to have been peculiar to Scotland and to have made special impression on more than one English traveler. Fynes Moryson, writing in 1598, says: They used hut one sheet, open at the sides and top, hut close at the feet and so doubled, and John Ray, the naturalist, who visited Scotland about 1662, remarked that it is the manner in some places there to lay on hut one sheet as large as two, turned up from the feet upward. The practice, I imagine, was continued until recent times, and I have when a hoy slept in a sheet of the kind. Such pieces of linen were termed sheets, par excellence, the single coverings which are now used being called half sheets. Scottish A trance clairvoyant.

Sauta Barbara. tna6d THAT THIRD WEDDING IN HIGH LIFE. Our reporter, to all intents and purposes good, made mention of the important fact that our prominent citizen, Mr. got married again, and for the third time. He likewise mentioned the third Mrs.

Forbush and incidently touched upon the bridegrooms three months celibacy, meaning thereby that Mr. Forbush bad led a chaste life that long. That he was accoutred in civil dress on the happy occasion was a necessity, since in his normal condition, being a representative of Clevelands ambassador administration, cap a pie is the order. Having read the complimentary notice of his third nuptial, it appears that he either did not under stand, or like it, hence he in the latest warrior style, accosted us, and said things about the Independent not over complimentary. We stoically let the little fellow relieve himself, until the old Dutch was asserting itself, and knowing something of the Teutonic nature within us, he passed out of sight, wrathy but unharmed.

He threatened, and there js the rub. Not being a subscriber, be cannot stop the Independent; not being big enough he can not harm us; not owing anything to him he cannot foreclose. We give him carte blanche to let himself in to his utmost, and since we are on the verge of the grave and have been since birth, we really dont know why we should be afraid of Mr. Forbush. He said our reporter spoke disrespectful of a fine lady; that ceitainly cannot be sustained, unless Mr.

Forbush considers his new affiance too good for him. The federal 6upe may bring down the wrath of the administration upon us, and if that calamity will leave us unscathed, he may try the more effective onslaught, namelyj making mouths at us. A supe was caught behind a chair in the Los Angeles Theater last night, and the laughter that followed liis predicament resulted in an encore by the tenor. It requires but little provocation. L.

Halls Catarrh Cure it is the only positive cure known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Halls Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers, that they offer One Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials.

Saturday, January 26, 1895 THE LATEST BENEVOLENT ASSOCIATION. Apparently the duller the times the more the rage for Associations. When two idle boys, girls, women or men meet in conclave, something is sure to come of it.

Something has been concocted, a supposed original thought has struck athwart their horizon, an embryo project long hidden in petto has developed into something tangible there and then, and as the two originals have conceived a thing too large to be grasped in toto by but two, more, many more are requisite to astouud the world at large with their conception, aud to give the thing the proper impetus, the local daily papers are resorted to, in order that the light, for a long time glimmering under the bushel, should at oue swoop like Bartholomews statue enlighten the sombre world. We have up to date no associate to divide the profits of the house with, and 6trauge to say we have not found any Samaritan yet who volunteers to share the losses. If things continue as brilliant in the last direction for an indefinite time, we will arrive at that happy state as to eventually outdo Mark Tapley that is, being jolly under adverse circumstances. Now, since every thinking individual has managed to got a partner to start an association of some kind, if were indeed wonderous if we failed to get one, and ever in mind where there is a will there is a way by hook or crook what may not be the brilliant result if once we set about to do some serious thinking. We have thought, aud here is the result.

Our esteemed contemporary is our alter ego iu the enterprise we propose. Thus! since every association from the importation of the Russian Jews to the relief of the unborn babes of Africa has had its day, we propose to start an association that is an association. no less than an enterprise for the demise of the daily papers of Santa Barbara. We forego the expense of incorporation and come to the matter in an ungarnished condition. The Santa Barbara Daily Demise Association, headquarters at the Independent office will meet to-night-and having met resolves and whereases as follows: That, since said association is composed of the proprietors of the Morning Press and evening Independent, we deem it of the essence to inform the good people of Santa Barbara that our columns henceforth will be devoted to the interest of the city solely: And whereas, we are content with the honor of the thing and nothing more, we remind the good people that notwithstanding the fact, that we employ Santa Barbara people solely and pay them at the end of each week, and further that we buy and pay for everything pertaining to our craft excepting stock not in our market we mag-naminiously request of our progressive men to leave no stone unturned to give their patronage without let or hindrance to Santa Barbaras job presses, or better still, patronize the newspapers and job presses of San Francisco, Los Angeles and Eastern cities.
