deep in the cellar just a half-game behind Columbus which edged them 5-4 in their Southern League baseball battle at Knights Castle Tuesday night But still on the bottom their I 1-13 record percentage points behind 12-14 Greenville in the Eastern Division And a half-game behind 12-13 Columbus And Knights manager Jim Essian having watched his team drop three of four games in its current homestand is not happy about it "We gave 'em too many Outs" Essian said after the Mudcats came from behind with three runs in the top of the sixth inning "We haven't been playing well It's awful early to be panicking but we somehow need to be more consistent We lost it defensively tonight" Essian pointed to a mental mistake and a physical error in that Columbus sixth With Charlotte in front 4-3 and runners on first and second Knights starter Greg Kallevig fielded a hot smash back to the mound "You go for the second-tofirst double play in that situation every time" Essian said Kallevig who wasn't sure he had the ball initially threw to third for the force-out Then third baseman Jeff Small compounded the problem by throwing the ball past first One run scored and batter Trent Hubbard wound up on third where he scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly The Knights seemed in control early but that's been misleading recently Charlotte wiped out the Mudcats' 1-0 lead with three runs in the third game of a Class A South Atlantic League baseball doubleheader 1 hree Fayetteville pitchers combined to shut out the Rangers 6-0 and break Gastonia's six-game winning streak The Rangers (18-8) who won the opening game 6-1 remain in first place in the Northern Division "You have to give (Fayetteville pitcher Leo Torres) the credit" Gastonia manager Orlando Go' mez said "1 pitched a heck of a ball game We lost that one but we can come right back and start another streak" The Rangers' streak reached six in the opener thanks to a strong fir ga Le hii an wi 6 Ni Fayetteville Gastonia 000 BOO 0-0
