1 TELEVISION The Sacramento Bee Final I Monday July 1 1991 811 Rilmirwm- i The Sacramento Bee Final I Monday July 19 1991 811 1 inommonninmenommonow La TELEVISION prediction: Spike Lee will win Grand Prix at Cannes "Bo's Family Reunion" for Nike "Max Drummer" for Levi's 501 jeans and "KC Hammer" for Pepsi (but forget Nike be- cause the technical virtuosity of the 14-BoJacksons-in-one spot will turn Cannes' "ideas not technique" jury against it) -gammnip T00 :1 4 VI It7" Cr cli 4a- BOB GARFIELD A Word on Sponsors I CERTAINLY isn't fair to say Donald Gunn's job is jetting around the world and watching 30-second TV spots He also watches Oh and OK the Leo Burnett Co senior vice president also runs Burnett's program kittracking global creative developments Thus this week Gunn will be in Cannes where the bikini bottoms are the size of anchovies where the anchovies are the size of bikini bottoms and where the International Advertising Film Festival will honor the ikdrld's best commercials But next week Gunn won't remember the glamour parties or flawless third wives 15ejeweling the Mediterranean He's risked his reputation by predicting the Grand Prix and he's wrong -yfranted he did it last year (from among 4000 entries he chose Maxell audiotape and the prize went to Maxell audiotape) but he will not repeat with this year's choice: an Australian Natural Gas spot called "Christians Lions" about a lad con uses title cards to approximate head-cold altered speech then uses dissolves like 01- trivin to clean up the language instantly But the subtleties of English here might elude some in the international jury Energizer batteries has its picture-perfect promo of a non-existent TV show called "HIPS" but the Energizer bunny won't soon win at Cannes Other Lion shoo-ins are a Dutch PSA against youth Crirnintity portraying a gang of teenage vandals who waddle away from the scene in diapers a warmly comical Uruguayan slice-of-life ad for Siempre Libre sanitary pads depicting a young teenager's embarrassment trying to get a pad from her older sister and a Norwegian magazine spot for Detnye which to dramatize its readers' independence shows a young woman in bed with a male windup doll They won't win the Grand Prix either because the best work is from the United States: "Bob's Road" for Nissan Sentra old British campaign for Carling Black Label beer this spot is practically an imagefor-image knockoff of an Old US spot for Doorman's cheese Gunn's selection isn't even the best humorous English-language ad from a public utility using anthropomorphic animals to promote home heating That distinction belongs to a British spot for the Electricity Association which expounds on "creature comforts" via an interview with a creature He is Terry a fidgety inarticulate cartoon turtle who has just come inside from running a race and is prattling on about heaters t'They got to be easily turn-on and turn-offable" he says gesturing with his fingers With the UK taking two of the last three Grand Prizes though a British ad won't win not even the riotous Coke-ad parodies (one from John Cleese for Schweppes and one for Barr's Irn-Bru) Canada's Oltrivin nasal spray ingeniously ol 1:01 ft IT MONEY'S on the Levi's cam- paign which features an off-cam 1 era Spike Lee interviewing a host of charming iconoclasts who wear their id- iosyncrasies on their sleeves and buttons on their flies The kid who pounds buckets in Times Square doesn't march to a differ- ent drummer he is one So yes Spike Lee will win at Cannes- if perhaps a month later than he would have wished And Donald Gunn his Christian having to settle for a Lion will have to fT drown his sorrows in anchovies BOB GARFIELD is a columnist for Advertising Age- magazine His column appears Monday in Scene demned by Nero to certain death only to be welcomed by tame lions domesticated by civilizing gas heat Sorry If any Australian ad were to cop best of show it would be one for Rev low-fat milk which shows exercising cows in Spandex But that won't win because a year after the Energizer bunny campaign was denied the Grand Prix for resembling an Ferring: Budget woes 'Story of Vinh' not a happy
