Lakers general The 'other' MeEnroe looks for an identity Patrick tries to escape John's shadow of c1( al ri Fl rr IT OU GOT MORE than baseball action during TBS' Atlanta Braves-Giants cablecast Sunday Call it programming as politics "I wasn't aware that Congress could pass a bill that hadn't been discussed" said TBS analyst Don Sutton "I thought the public had a right to know That's the impression I got from my civics class" Viewers saw an on-screen graphic urging them to "Let Your Voice Be Heard!" as announcer Skip Caray urged them to write their members of Congress "assuming they can read" TBS was even more direct Friday night Caray warned viewers "We may be going through the pennant race with many of you missing a lot of it" The cable network offered to pay for telegrams to US representatives and senators in the name of any viewer who called a TBS toll-free number TBS says about 6000 viewers took them up on the offer The issue is superstations Major League Baseball Commissioner Fay Vincent says super-stations such as TBS "restrict the viability" of local TV games because they compete for viewers and ad dollars TBS counters that local TV ratings actually increase slightly for games also carried by superstations It's an old dispute What's new says Bert Carp the Turner Broadcasting vice president for government affairs is an "lith hour" attempt in Congress to hinder superstations Here's Carp's carp: Both houses of Congress have passed versions of a comprehensive bill affecting many areas of cable TV Now the bill has gone to a Senate-House conference which could be expected to simply iron out wrinkles between each house's proposal Carp won't specifically accuse Major League Baseball or specific politicians But he says there's talk of adding an amendment to the cable bill that would require local cable operators to black out superstation cablecasts for any game being carried on local cast or cable TV If that passed any cable operators in what Major League Baseball defines as a team's "home market" would have to comply That's more consequential than it might sound: The Giants' home market includes Oregon Nevada and more than half of California If games had to be blacked out local cable operators could end up fielding calls from irate viewers and having to find alternate programming to fill time slots of unpredictable length baseball games don't always end on time Such headaches says Carp might prompt local cable TV operators to dump TBS' Braves games altogether and simply say "give us a movie Ted (Turner)" Carp says "We fought this back-room deal behind closed doors Then we had to tell the Df you gi it Two Dolphins are arrested a ri fi tl Leon Searcy their top draft pick from the University of Miami Searcy reportedly will Hudson during the 1986-87 season according to the documents NHL President-elect Gil Stein said he has received overwhelming support from fans owners and hockey officials for his idea to create "Dream Teams" to compete for Canada and the United States in the 1994 Winter Olympics He said he has not approached NHL players or their union about the idea but believes the players would support it 0 Rick Sutcliffe one of the most charitable people in sports is always willing to lend a hand Or in Bruce Springsteen's case a half-million dollars "It's no big deal really" Sutcliffe said last week "It happened so long ago" It was back in 1986 when Springsteen came calling on Sutcliffe and it wasn't to talk to the Cy Young Award winner about finding the perfect pitch Instead Springsteen was set to buy a house in Beverly Hills owned by actor Mark Harmon and was about $500000 short The problem as Springsteen's representatives explained was that he had a certificate of deposit that wasn't going to mature until two days after the closing was to be completed and didn't want to forfeit the interest So Springsteen wondered would it be possible to delay the paperwork? But Barry Axelrod the agent who represented best buddies Harmon and Sutcliffe had a better idea Knowing that Sutcliffe was a big Springsteen fan even though he had never met the singer Axelrod asked Sutcliffe if he wanted to lend The Boss $500000 for two days Sutcliffe who happened to have $500000 ready to buy an annuity quickly agreed After the sale was completed Springsteen and Harmon married to actress Pam Dawber teamed up to buy a prize shotgun for Sutcliffe a big-time hunter Soon thereafter Springsteen played a concert in Chicago and sent a limo to pick up Sutcliffe for the show Since then Sutcliffe whose famous friends include Bill Murray Michael Jordan and Huey Lewis has stayed in touch with Springsteen often hearing from him after big games But Springsteen who pitched on a scruffy field in his "Glory Days" video has not asked for any pitching tips Sutcliffe said By the way the friendship with Sutcliffe is about all Springsteen has to show from that 8500000 loan: Springsteen lost the house to actress Julianne Phillips in their divorce settlement 1 1: 1 (I Tight end Ferrell Ed munds and rookie defensive end Larry Webster of the Miami Dolphins were arrested and charged by Opa-locka police Thursday with solicitation of prostitution The state attorney's office also filed charges Edmunds and Webster were caught in an undercover sting operation in Opa-locka a community just north of Miami Phoenix Cardinals linebacker Eric Hill will be fined and sent to a counselor after being arrested for allegedly fondling three women at a Flagstaff Ariz nightclub Saturday the team said The New York Jets welcomed holdout offensive guard Dave Cadi gan but lost wide receiver Rob Moore for at least two weeks Cadigan agreed to a two-year deal believed to be worth $13 million Moore re-sprained his left ankle in Saturday's 41-14 exhibition victory over the Philadelphia Eagles I Eagles owner Norman Braman paid himself $75 million in salary in 1990 to repay money he loaned the club five years earlier NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue testified at the NFL free-agency trial in Minneapolis The Los Angeles Raiders suspended special-teams standout Elvis Patterson after he had an altercation with assistant coach Jack Stanton last week The Pittsburgh Steelers have come to terms with offensive tackle I By Bill Jauss Chicago Tribune CHICAGO Henry Aaron's brother Tommie played big-league baseball Walter Payton's brother Eddie used to run back kicks in the NFL So Patrick McEnroe isn't the only athlete who has worked his way through an identity crisis Two of them in fact The first came at Stanford where McEnroe successfully dealt with the question "Who am I anyway besides John McEnroe's younger brother?" Next after struggling a year and a half without much success on the pro tennis tour McEnroe came to grips with the question "What kind of player am I and how good can I become?" Fans can find the answer to the second question at the $50000 Windy City pro tournament which started Monday at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Winnetka Ill The 26-year-old McEnroe No 84 in the world computer rankings will be the second-ranked pro in the tournament "I'm not the player my brother is but who is?" McEnroe asked But McEnroe is no slouch He can be the tennis equivalent of the deadly counterpunching boxer His return of serve is so strong a weapon that he's capable at any time of breaking an opponent's serve He also is difficult to type as an opponent Like his brother he has a superb grasp of the game A good athlete who has succeeded in soccer basketball and baseball McEnroe can deliver winning strokes from the baseline at the net or from unpredictable places Patrick was born in 1966 when John was 7 and already on his way to championships and he began swinging a racket at 3 He reached the finals of the 1983 USTA boys 18 national tournament "I didn't burn out even though I started so young because I always had other interests" Patrick McEnroe explained "I played soccer all through high school I still shoot baskets in the gym Parents who push kids into sports should remember that the kids should still have fun and enjoy the sport" He enrolled at Stanford in 1984 and graduated with a political science degree four years later He played on NCAA champion tennis teams in 1986 and '88 He expressed admiration that Stanford had won five NCAA team titles in the last year while maintaining its high standards in academics and its graduation rate of athletes "A remarkable record" McEnroe said "It showo they're doing something right Stanford manages to recruit athletes who are extremely hard workers people who strive to excel in athletics and academics "College helped me a lot as a person I grew up I found my own identity I was not so much John's brother "We won two titles I was captain I made a lot of great friends I really miss Stanford" When he graduated and joined the tour Patrick Mc Enroe received a rude shock College tennis hadn't toughened him for battles with pros the world over who relied on grroundstrokes for weekly paychecks "I realized I'd regressed in tennis in college because of the competition" he said "In college you just get by in a lot of matches You're not physically or mentally tough When you go out on tour you're a nobody even if you've won the NCAA" Like his brother Patrick McEnroe excels in doubles He won two pro doubles events as an amateur one with John and the other in 1987 when he and Jim Grabb knocked off Wimbledon champs Ken Flach and Robert Seguso He will play only singles here "I've always loved doubles" McEnroe said "It's an entirely different game I love the team aspect of it because I've always played team sports It's nice to be part of a team as I was in college" John McEnroe ruled tennis as No 1 in the world from 1980 to 1984 What was John's effect on Patrick when the kid from Stanford joined the pro tour in '88? "It helped me initially" Patrick McEnroe said "I was able to get wild cards get into tournaments because I was John's little brother But that put pressure on me I felt I didn't deserve it hadn't earned it And I just wasn't ready for the tour physically or mentally" Patrick McEnroe's doubles play enabled him to cash some paychecks early in his pro career but his singles game suffered He took steps to toughen his body and mind for the weekly grab for money and rankings He stepped up the length and intensity of practice sessions He worked out in the gym He put to use his grasp of the game His singles play improved So did his standing on the computer "I'm here this week to improve my singles play and my toughness in matches to pick up points hopefully to win it" McEnroe said "I'm stronger I know what I have to do to win "Now I'm back to playing to my strengths" a UPCOMING Today ersfield at San Jose 7:15 pm HORSE RACING Santa Rosa Fair meet simulcast at Cal Expo 12:30 pm TV 4:30 pm Baseball: Chicago at Montreal Wednesday 4:30 pm Baseball: New York at Pitts- TV burgh AS History lesson Dick Schaap on ESPN on Sunday said Olympic history might be a guide to contemporary squabbles at the Games At issue: The thoroughly predictable reticence of Nike endorsers Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley to wear Olympic Reebok warm-up suits on the medals stand Such an occurrence was of course one of the reasons Reebok was interested in paying for the warm-up suit sponsorship in the first place Back to Schaap He says the Olympics in ancient Greece banned female spectators but the mother of one athlete disguised herself as a male competitor to sneak in and see her son She was discovered supposedly prompting officials to respond by having athletes compete nude "This may be the solution for Michael Jordan" Schaap said "It could be his tribute to ancient Olympic tradition and probably wouldn't hurt NBC's ratings 4:30 pm 4:35 Baseball: Cincinnati at At Ian- Baseball: Cincinnati at At Ian- ta ta 7 pm Baseball: San Francisco at San Diego 5:30 pm Baseball: Oakland at Texas 5:30 pm Basketball: Los Angeles Summer Pro League taped 8:05 pm Harness racing: Cal Expo stretch calls every half-hour KSAC (1240) RADIO 7 pm Baseball: San Francisco at San Diego ED I 7:30 pm Baseball: Houston at Los Angeles Wg RADIO 5:46 am Olympics: Barcelona report KCBS (740) 9 am Olympics: Coverage through 1 pm with updates thereafter through 4:30 pm SAC (1240) 5:15 pm Baseball: Oakland at Texas KCTC (1320) KMYC (1410) KW) (560) 6:30 pm Baseball: San Francisco at San Diego KNBR (680) KSMJ (1380) Your prize a Picasso Gold silver and bronze medals were not always the reward for finishing in the first three at the Olympic Games In the 1900 Paris Games valuable pieces of art were presented instead Sizing things up For the US Olympic team one size obviously does not fit all Reebok says it produced 38000 pieces of clothing in 12 sizes ranging from double extra-small for female gy mnasts to size-6 extra-large for Mark Henry the 367- pound weightlifter The company also produced size-3 extra-tall for the men's basketball team Bee News Srices EVENTS 5:46 am Olympics: Barcelona report KCBS (740) 9 am Olympics: Coverage through 1 pm with updates thereafter through 4:30 pm KSAC (1240) 1:30 pm Olympics: Basketball Team USA vs Puerto Rico KSAC (1230) 5:15 pm Baseball: Oakland at Texas KCTC (1320) KMYC (1410) KM) (560) 6:30 pm Baseball: San Francisco at San Diego KNBR (680) KSM1 (1380) EVENTS Blame the messenger CBS' Jim Kaat in the third inning of the Toronto Blue Jays-New York Yankees game Saturday suggested New York pitcher Me lido Perez had the stuff for a no-hitter Seconds later Toronto's Pat Borders got a hit Said Kaat: "We're ing to get 01 blame for that" USA Today BASEBALL California League: Bakersfield at San Jose 7:15 pm GOLF City Junior Championships Bing Maloney at day HORSE RACING Santa Rosa Fair meet simulcast at Cal Expo 12:30 pm Harness meet Cal Expo 7:30 pm BASEBALL Ca Mlle League: Bak.
