differ- ent public-service announcements the radio station is giving away key chains with a condom encased in plastic and a rather provocative printed message However while some listeners have protested and the key chains have been the subject of television news reports there's been much more sup port than expected The station gave away 1000 of the key chains in less than a week and pro: gram director Jeff McMurray said another 1000 that arrived this week will likely be gone by this weekend "It's easy it's fashionable and it's fun" McMurray said "If we can save just one listener from AIDS I don't see why anybody would object" Broadcasting bits The spring Arbitron report is due out in mid-July but 'right now classic rocker The Eagle is ahead of album rocker 93 Rock (KRXQ 937 FM) for the first time since The Eagle changed to rock in November 1990 The Eagle tops 93 Rock and The point (KQPT 1005 FM) in audience share in the 12 and older 18-34 and 25-54 age groups "We've gone from worst to first" McMurray said So far 1992 has been a good year for The Eagle which recently was voted best rock station by readers of Sacramento magazine K-Bear (KQBR 1055 FM) will remain a country station said Gary Brobst general manager of Country 105 (KRAK 1051 FM) and KRAK (1140 AM) Brobst's company EZ Communications programs K-Bear under a local marketing agreement with its owners There had been rumors that K-Bear would change its format to either contemporary hits or album rock next month when the FCC is expected to approve of a power boost (from 3000 to 6000 watts) and a dial position change to 1043 However Brobst said this week "All we want here is country" Brobst's stations are engaged in a fierce market struggle with rival Fresh Country 985 (KNCI 985 FM) K108 (KXOA 1079 FM) is actively pursuing a morning personality to pair with Brian Casey The candidates are all working outside of this market according to station general manager John Geary John Winkel former general manager of Country 105 (KRAK 1051 FM) and KRAK (1140 AM) and partner Ron Miller have purchased four radio stations including Stockton's KWG (1230 AM) arid Tracy's KSGO (1009 FM) both oldies format stations Under the Silverado Broadcasting Corporation title Winkel and Miller also purchased two radio stations in Spokane Wash The four stations were purchased from Home News Co for nearly $4 million Winkel said this week he'd like to buy two more stations preferably in California but not in Sacramento Radio garden show host Bruce Asakawa will broadcast his program live today from the studios of Sunny 1320 (KCTC AM) from 8-10 am Asakawa whose program usually originates from San Diego is heard on 14 stations on the West Coast Charlie Weiss news director at Mix 96 (KYMX 961 FM) this week began afternoon commute-time news breaks for the station at 4:40 pm and 5:20 pm Previously Weiss had only done news breaks during the morning commute Earlier this week we wrote that Channel 3's (KCRA) Steve Swatt who announced his resignation last week was Sacramento TV's only full-time Capitol reporter However we were informed by Channel 13 (KOVR) news director Bob Yuna that Jack Kavanagh is spending his entire work week on the Capitol beat for the station It seems like just yesterday when former Channel 13 news director Mike Ferring eliminated the Capitol as a full-time beat and explained state politics thusly: "It's boring dull arcane and intricate" Yuna said Kavanagh will cover the political conventions for Channel 13 an assignment Channel 3 has opted not to staff this time around Swatt gave four weeks' notice until July 10 in hopes the state budget woes would be resolved before he left Don't be surprised to see Swatt now an executive vice president of Nelson Lucas Communications on the Channel 3 set on election night (Nov 3) in the capacity of an expert commentator "Cops" Fox's successful reality program featuring law enforcement at work has been purchased in syndication by Channel lo (lam and will begin airing Monday through Friday at 7:30 pm this September The program will replace "Candid Camera" According to station program director Matt Chan the syndicated version of "Cops" will be seen in New York Los Angeles Sacramento and perhaps one or two other markets before its general syndication season of 1993 The reason for the early release markets is to test the program hope it draws big ratings and then pitch it nationwide the following year Channel 13 reporter Jim Wieder is working on a five-part series on Vietnam The series is scheduled to begin July 13 eating I'm working" They have also put up a partition in the office so that people who walk into the office can't see the children's toys Ludozissy even has a small cot by her desk so her son can sleep comfortably nearby Ludozissy and Yang expect their sons' adventurous crawling stage will hit in a couple of months They're planning to hire a babysitter to keep an eye on the two infants in the office when they become too much for the busy moms to handle No one knows how many people bring their children to their offices but Jacquie Sacramento's child care coordinator suspects that the numbers are rising because the number of families in which both parents work is rising In 1990 42 million babies were born in the United States and many of their parents are two-career couples who need child care In Sacramento County last year some 29000 children were in child care said Jaci White co-director of Child Action a Sacramento child-care resource and referral network And besides day care can take a big bite out of one's paycheck with the cost ranging from $250 to $650 a month for infants under 2 years "I'm not making much money and I couldn't afford it any other way The only other option is to go on welfare" Yang said at least a benefit we can offer (our employees) since we can't offer them a retirement plan" said Jody Kovill clinical director of Positive Option a foster-care service that has let employees bring their children to work since it opened three years ago "We don't have the kids here all the time but when we need to" be said "Sometimes day care is not available We make it OK to bring the kids to work" Most of the businesses offering the novel policy are family-owned and operated And usually the bosses have kids of their own to bring to work like Kovill's 2year-old Krysi Positive Option has no ground rules of when employees' children are welcome but that's because most staff members are conscientious about the disruption their children may cause Kovill said Knecht the Positive Option supervisor takes either Geoff 5 or Da Ilin 112 to work a couple of times a month to give his wife a break at home His daughter Shauna now a third-grader has also 't spent time with pad at the office When his kids come for a visit he takes them out to lunch and makes sure back room when she gets sleepy Be- cause the baby's room is next to the employee break room other workers simply take their breaks outside she said "With five employees it's easy enough to be flexible" Howard said Employees who can bring their children to work also say they are more win- ing to work overtime because of their appreciation for the unconventional benefit "I'm more apt to be more flexible of what the agency expects of me because I know they've stretched their boundaries for me" Knecht said "I feel I owe the 1 agency something" However some employees admit 1 they're not quite as efficient when their children are in the office with them "There are times that are chaotic" admitted Janet Shwartz-Edmisen a family' consultant at Positive Option "I'll be in a meeting and Victoria will be wanting to pull me out of it It doesn't make for 1: the best work environment at all times" When employees at Positive Option have to roll up their sleeves and work uninterrupted they don't bring their kids to the office opting for baby sitters instead he secret to handling one's children at work is being super-or- ganized and efficient "If the child is at work then the par- ent is doing two jobs Some of us can do that but it takes a lot of concentration" said Jacquie Swaback the city's child care coordinator "It depends on the I place work and age of the kid and the skills of the parent" White of Child Action agreed "Most places are not built for kids and 1 office buildings are not likely to be child-proofed" For example a restaurant may not be a safe place for a child because of hot stoves and constant kitchen traffic White said Also wet diapers can spread germs to customers Massachusetts health officials recent- ly closed down a restaurant after they contended that the owner's 19-monthold son's diapers posed a sanitary prob- lem A judge later reopened the restaurant but ordered the mother to keep the child out of the kitchen Companies also risk the chance that clients may view the practice as unprofessional But most customers who hear babies crying in the background of Yang's phone calls have commented on her good fortune "People don't understand at first when they hear the baby crying (on the phyne)" Yang said "I say that we have ch)ld care at the office and they tend to 6 relax and are nicer to us" BeeLeilani Hu breaks From left Susan Grant Janet Schwartz-Edmisten and Mechelle Jungsten entertain 2-year-old
