Eagles 27-17 The Browns turned an interception and a fumble into two touchdowns within 57 seconds late in the second quarter Bo Scott scoring the first on a one-yard plunge and Phipps throwing 23 yards to wide receiver Frank Pitts for the other After Phipps rolled four yards for a TD the first time the Browns had the ball in the third quarter Eagle rookie quarterback John Reaves of the leading the Browns to their first victory after an opening game loss and six consecutive preseason losses The Eagles led the Browns in net yardage 318-297 but they produced only 66 yards with a futile rushing game and relied primarily on short screen passes for their aerial offensive Defensive end Bob Briggs intercepted a screen pass by Liske and returned it 16 yards to the six-yard line to set up the first touchdown which brtke uo a 6-3 struggle tv" Kelly carried to the one and Aeott took it in rookie Pat Gibbs fumbled on the ensuing kirk-off return and Rick Kingrea recovered to set the Browns Morton completing third-down passes three times including the three-yard flip for the touchdown to Lance Alworth with two minutes left in the game FRITSCH who beat out Mike Clark for the Dallas kicking job this year set the club record with his 54-yard-er in the second period and added chip shots of 13 yards the third period and eight yards in the fourth period 54-yarder was the longest in club history The eight-yarder came at the outset of the fourth period when Coach Tom Landry decided not to go for the touchdown from the one with Dallas leading 13-7 field goal made it 16-7 but 100-yard mark career total for the Redskins eclipsed the 5102 yards rushing amassed by Don Bosseler over an eight-season period from 1957 to 1964 In the first half the defense set up the first Washington TD and scored the second Curt Knight who missed a 24-yard field goal in the first quarter kicked one from 31 yards The Redskins got their first score on a six-yard toss from Bill Kilmer to Jerry Smith his tight end after safety Roosevelt Taylor got the ball on the St Louis 29 with an interception of Tim Van Galder Just moments into the second quarter defensive end 1 Biggs cracked period for the only CArdinal points in the first half BROWN set the record in the second period on his longest run of the day a 28-yard yarder on which he broke several tackles Quarterback Gary Cuozzo put some spark in the sluggish St Louis offense in the second half after repVJng rookie Van Galder who Wl thrown two interceptions The second by linebacker Chris Hanburger set up the third touchdown in the third quarter Kilmer again hit Smith for five yards and the score Cuozzo guided the Cards on a 59-yard scoring drive in the third period with Leon Burns diving the final yard Norm Snead came right back with a 94-yard touchdown pass to Rich Houston the longest ever against Dallas to cut the Dallas lead to 16-14 But New York never got back into the game because after an exchange of punts the Cowboys started their 80-yard drive that wrapped it up Snead who entered the game when Randy Johnson suffered a slight concussion the first time the Giants had the ball flipped a 55-yard pass to
