2-A THE MIAMI HERALD Mon July 10 1972 Killings Mark S(ari Orange Marches Ar freight fcoition British Send More Troops BELFAST Northern Ireland (UPI) The British' Army said it was disoatching 500 more troops to Northern Ireland Sunday as four execution-type killings in Belfast and a clash between soldiers and Roman Catholics in Por tadown marked the beginning of a week of Protestant Orange Order marches The annual marches which celebrate the July 12 1690 victory of Protestant King William of Orange over Catholic King James II at the Battle of the Boyne have in the past touched off sectarian fighting The additional soldiers brought to 16000 the number of British troops on duty in Northern Ireland Police and part-time soldiers add another 10000 men to the security pool The Belfast shootings wounded six other men In the Portadown clash two soldiers and two policemen were injured and eight men and two women were arrested killings and the death in a hospital Saturday night of a man wounded in an earlier Belfast shooting incident made the weekend the bloodiest since the start of a bilateral truce 13 days ago between Irish Republican Army Provisionals and the British Army AT LEAST 18 persons have now died in shooting incidents since the truce The toll since August 1969 when British troops first arrived in the province stands at 410 Like most of the others since the start of the ceasefire deaths appeared to have been carried out by Protestants or Roman Catholics settling personal scores according to one Army source One of two men found shortly after 4 am on Stewart Street in Roman Catholic markets area wore a hood over his head which covered a single bullet wound an Army spokesman said A second man found nearby died later in Royal Victoria Hospital of multiple gunshot wounds The next victim was found near a reservoir and waterworks on the mixed Antrim Road in North Belfast after a woman told police she saw men dumping what appeared to be a body At New Ministers an army patrol came upon a burned-out car on Little Distillery Street between the Catholic Lower Falls area and the Protestant Donegal Road One dead man and three wounded men were inside AN ARMY patrol came under fire early Sunday from a sniper in the mixed Old Park Road area where last week a patrol battled 14 gunmen and hit two The army spokesman said soldiers reported hitting one man in fight The trouble at Portadown a predominantly Catholic town 25 miles southwest of Belfast came after Catholics erected barriers on Obins Street in the early morning hours Sunday to block a planned march by Orangemen to church Some 1000 Protestants gathered in front of the barriers while police and army units tried to persuade the Catholics to remove them Tension grew rocks and bot tles were thrown after about 90 minutes army bulldozers moved in to smash the barricades Troops used rubber bullets to push the crowds back As they did so a sniper fired at the soldiers and three bullets hit the vehicles There were no injuries and fire was not returned the spokesman said The Protestant march then went on without further incident In East Belfast some 500 masked and hooded Protestants 598 per cent in Nebraska in 1968 his 62 per cent there in 1960 It boils into abbreviated phrases how delegates once made news: governor over that SOB McG regarding A deposed chairman from South because somebody else decided to get married and stay home So what happens when somebody loses his little black book or everything goes bananas just at the wrong time?
