Beech street, janitor at the First Christian church, was found dead in the Sunday scnool room adjoining the church, near Main and Ninth streets, at 10:30 o'clock this morning. His death was caused by heart attack. Smurthwaite went to the church at 8:30 o'clock, and was seen about an hour before he was found. Fire Chief C. J.

Hanlon, on duiy at the fire sta tion, across the street from the church, noticed a girl about 12 years of age atempting to unlock a door leading iuto the Sunday echool build lug and went to her help. When he unlocked the door of the church, Hanlon found Smurthwaite stretched out across a bench. His body was still warm. Hanlon called Dr M. King.

1853 a son of John and Sisson Harrison Stokes. While his father was serving In the Union army, the son assisted in the support of his brothers and sis era on their Jefferson county farm. At the age of 16, Dr. Stokes and his brother established a newspaper in Toronto and later founded th- Toron to Tribune. When he wa.i 20 years of age.

he secured a teaching certificate. Later he entered the Columbus Medical school from which he grad tinted In 1882. He practiced in Em pire for a short time and later located in Toronto. After a post course in New York City. Dr.

Stokes located In California in 1902. His widow, who was formerly Misr Jennie E. Myers, and two sons. Dr William F. Stokes, Phoenix.
