THE MIAMI HERALD Sat July 1 1972 orthwest Flights Here Unsure NEWS SUMMARY MINNEAPOLIS Minn (AP) Northwest Airlines pilots went on strike early Friday halting service by the seventh-largest air carrier at the beginning of the July 4 holiday weekend A pilot spokesman estimated that 50000 to 60000 passengers would be affected immediately The pilots set up picket lines at the Seattle and Min-neapolis-St Paul airports Northwest canceled 152 flights in and out of Minne- apolis-St Paul Friday and operated only four flights during the day 362-passenger 747s between the Twin Cities and Chicago The flights were manned by supervisory personnel A Northwest spokesman said holiday weekend flight schedules were indefinite United Air Lines and North Central Airlines added some extra flights for passengers who fly by Northwest Western Airlines said it was flooded with calls and might add flights to Portland and Seattle if the strike continued In Miami Northwest canceled its flights for Friday but left in effect its schedules for the weekend in hopes of a settlement NORTHWEST operates seven flights into Miami International and seven out daily to such cities as Atlanta Chicago Minneapolis and Milwaukee It operates four flights a day into Fort Lauderdale The airline employs 112 persons at the two stations Northwest clerks at Mm-nrapolis-St Paul airport and other terminals served by the airline were selling tickets for flights until the pickets appeared a clerk said Then they started sending the passengers to other airlines Secretary of Labor James Hodgson on Thursday urged the pilots and the airline to continue operations for at least 10 days while negotia tions were resumed The pilots declined" to comply Northwest President Donald Nyrop wired Hodgson that the airline was willing to go along with the request He refused to comment on the pilots' refusal to call off the strike Negotiations which had been broken off at midnight Wednesday resumed Thursday night but were adjourned ll2 hours later No further negotiations were scheduled Robert Rezanka of the pilots' association said in a statement that the decision to strike was reaffirmed after the negotiation session adjourned no progress whatever to THE STATEMENT said the breakup of the negotiating session left the pilots no alternative to reaffirm their previous position that without a William Sweigert said his order would cover all banks in the United States and would remain in effect until July 20 when a three-judge panel would open hearings on the law The restraining order was issued at the request of the American Civil Liberties Union the California Bankers Association and Fortney Stark of Walnut Creek Calif a banker who also is a Democratic congressional candidate THE PLAINTIFFS charged that the act Public Law 91-508 violated the US Constitution The law enacted by congress in 1970 would open most bank secrets to the scrutiny of the federal government for the
