It is prolific, with a life cycle of only four weeks. Four or five generations of weevils may appear in a single season. The boll weevil attacks the cotton plant and causes enormous financial loss to farmers. The cotton plant grows like a low shrub with broad three lobed leaves and attractive flowers. The blossoms are followed by seeds enclosed in a capsule or boll. Each seed is surrounded by a downy fiber or cotton. The boll weevil attacks the flower buds and also the bolls of the cotton plant. This destructive insect arrived in the United States around 1892. It came from Central America through Mexico and across the Texas border into this country. Arsenic sprays have been used to control this pest. Many southern farmers have suffered so much damage to cotton crops that they have turned to other crops and the raising of cattle, hogs and poultry. This diversification has improved economic conditions in the South. 4-30 (Mike.Btiterbaugh of.Waynesboro, Pa., wins a prize for this question.
