Augusta Pirates 7-6 in the South Atlantic League championship series opener Gastonia's win gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the bestof-five baseball series with Game 2 tonight at 7 at Sims Park With Gastonia down 4-1 in the fifth inning Rangers center fielder Thayer Swain went 3 feet over the center-field wall to rob Mike Brewington of a home run That got the Rangers who appeared flat after a six-day layoff very excited "It got everybody real fired up in the dugout" Swain said "The hitters were excited especially (Tim) Piechowski" Piechowski's enthusiasm showed two innings later With the Rangers down 6-3 he hit a towering two-run homer to right to make it a one-run game The Rangers' winning rally started in the bottom of the seventh when Jose Hernandez earned a leadoff walk off reliever Jeff Neely (10-9) Hernandez went to third when Swain reached on an error Cris Colon followed with a grounder and Hernandez slid home with the tying run when catcher Mandy Romero couldn't handle Ben Shelton's throw Oiler followed with a slow grounder that seemed to duck under the glove of Pirates second baseman Flavio Williams bringing in Swain to make it 7-6 "That one had eyes didn't it?" Oiler said "All I was trying to do was get the guy to third and then when it got through I just watched a friend score' Kyle Spencer sat Augusta down in order in the eighth Jim Hvizda did the same in the ninth and the Rangers had the series lead Augusta had taken a 4-0 lead after three innings Gastonia starter Darren Oliver allowed two runs in the first without giving up a hit He walked three Augusta batters and hit two with pitches The Pirates added single runs in the second and third Gastonia cut the lead to 4-2 with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings And after Augusta went ahead 6-2 in the sixth Doug Croak's RBI double and Piechowski's homer helped trim the margin to 6-5 after six innings Stillwell FWhite City I Detroit 2 Ctty 7 Detroit 9 Schu Seitzer Whitaker GWarct
